Customer Reviews of You Are Here
Surprisingly Good Without Guitar Wiz Michael Schenker! UFO's latest cd "You Are Here" is surprisingly good seeing as though veteran UFO guitar wiz Michael Schenker is not with the band on this release. Two new memebers have been inducted into the classic British rock band's lineup with Jason Bonham (the late John Bonham's son) on drums and Vinnie Moore on lead guitar as well as a return by UFO guitarist/keyboardist Paul Raymond (who was absent on UFO's "Covenant" and "Sharks" albums). I was somewhat hesitant in buying this cd but being a long time UFO fan I took a chance. From the minute I heard the first song "When Daylight Goes To Town" I knew this cd was gonna cook. Other superb songs include "Black Cold Coffee", "The Wild One", "Call Me","Baby Blue" and "Jello Man". Longtime vocalist Phil Mogg's vocals are as good as ever and the entire band sounds tight. Newcomers Jason Bonham and Vinnie Moore both fit right in and Moore's guitar licks are red hot! While "You Are Here" may not be as good as UFO's reunion cd "Walk On Water" it is an excellent cd and is certainly better than "Sharks" and "Covenant".
A feast of tasty treats.
I have been spinning this cd for a few months and I really think it has to be one of UFO's 5 best efforts. This bands sound has always come mainly from the axe, and with Vinnie Moore
weilding it on this one they sound fantastic! I have never been able to really compare him to other guitarists, he is unique and gifted in his own right. Mogg, Way, Raymond and Bonham all together with Moore are the ingredients for a feast of tasty treats for your ears. My favourite cut is track 6, Slipping Away. It has every thing a great UFO song should have. Moore doesnt shred a solo but instead decides to add a beautifull lead guitar to the entire song and Mogg's voice sounds emotional and has depth of character that is so hard to find in so many bands vocals. I played this cd during our 4th of July neighberhood bash and it got nothing but great comments. And no one on my street had even heard of these guys! Very impressive indeed! I find myself impatiently waiting for more from this lineup, and that alone gives it 5 stars.
This One's A Keeper...
Even though the "Mad Axeman" was present on UFO's previous effort "Sharks", I felt his playing sounded worn, tired & unispired. Although the previous statement borders on blasphemy, I stand by it.
Now enter Vinnie Moore & Jason Bonham for Phil & Pete's latest attempt to resurrect the UFO legacy. You know what, it almost works! While nothing will even compare to "Hello Chicago..." followed by Schenker's intro to "Natural Thing", sometimes comparisons between apples & oranges just ain't fair. In this case I feel it applies. Let's face it, Schenker is/was (depending how you look at it) one of the top five "metal" guitarists ever; so comparing this album to the 70's halcyon days of UFO is not really fair. Moore & Bonham inject a little venom into the band and produce a decent, hard rockin' album. The songs have some great melodies; and even old Phil Mogg blasts out some great vocals and lyrics to match.
Hey, any metal fan will give this album at least a half a dozen spins or so before it's ready for jewel case storage.
For any UFO fan, it is a must have. So until the next "reunion", this one will definitely carry you over.
Oh and FYI, if you have not clued into Mogg's other band called $ign Of Four, do it. "Dancing With St. Peter" is a killer album.
