Customer Reviews of Yoga International
Appealing Yoga content for all There are very few journals/magazines in the west whose focus is Yoga. Yoga international is one of them. I find YI has an appeal to either beginners or experienced practitioners. <

>The regular column - Inner Quest - by Pundit Rajmani Tigunait helps one gain an understanding of many of the more abstract questions regarding yoga. The column Yoga Sutra expounds a sutra in every issue. It is nice to see Sanskrit in print, but don't get left out - every word is translated as in a dictionary including the pronunciation. Usually you will find a sequence of asanas (postures) that are demonstrated by down-to-earth people (and not those picture perfect models). YI has come up with great articles on real life experiences on Yoga's benefits to many ailments such as Fibromyalgia, MS, etc. <

>There is a fine balance between the articles and advertising. I find the ads don't take away the focus from the articles. It is nice to know that a Yoga magazine delivers not solely relying on gloss appeal alone. I recommend the magazine to all my students as an inexpensive and great way to keep in touch with Yoga. <

In depth yoga mag
Yoga International is different than Yoga Journal, in a positive way. Both magazines have great qualities to them. YI is quite a bit less commercial, meaning less glossy, ads for expensive items. Yoga International articles tend to focus less on just the physical aspects of Yoga, and give a broader in depth discussion in articles on meditation, spirituality as it relates to Yoga, as well as asanas (postures.) It is in some ways less mainstream, westernized; the magazine did a while back update it's look to be sharper, less illustrations, more graphic, sharp photography to compete with Yoga Journals look, and popularity. As a certified yoga teacher/practicioner for over 10 years, I'd say check each one out at newsstand, then subscribe.
Best Yoga Magazine I've seen!!!
I think that Yoga International is, hands down, the best magazine on this topic. It has interesting, well written articles on all aspects of yoga (philosophy, life style, meditation, sanskrit chants, etc.) and beautiful photographs. I read it cover to cover as soon as it comes. In addition, the magazine is supplemented by its website where I've been able to actually hear the pronounciation of sanskrit chants.
To give you a flavor of the magazine, a recent issue (May 2003) included the following articles: Awakening to the Gayatri Mantra; Postures to Activate the Lymph System for Breast Care; Awakening Spirit, A Joyful Practice: Cultivating the Moment; Really Relaxing, The Yoga Sutra: Four Pillars of Concentration, Descendants of Gods (by Huston Smith), and Everyday Ayurveda. In addition, there was a wonderful editorial offering a alternate perspective on viewing the world in these times when many people are viewing everything through a lens of fear.
