The DTX-3000's stylish satellite speakers are designed to accentuate every voice and every bit of action in your DVD movies or TV shows. Each speaker features a two-way acoustic suspension design with magnetically shielded drivers that can sit near the TV without causing video distortion. Dual 2.5-inch woofers and 0.5-inch tweeters are also built into the speaker cabinets, with a frequency range of 90 Hz to 50 kHz. And thanks to the individual floor stands--one for each of the two main speakers and three surround speakers--you don't need to find empty bookshelves or wall brackets for installation.

Yamaha's Expanded Bass Response system is built into the DTX-3000's powered 130-watt subwoofer, bringing rich and thunderous lows to action-packed films. The high-power sub also features Advanced Yamaha Servo Technology (YST), which precisely governs the motion of the 8-inch driver to deliver a tight, responsive 28 Hz to 200 Hz frequency response. YST also helps generate a maximum output from the relatively small speaker enclosure, which checks in at 11.41 by 14.17 by 12.24 inches (W x H x D).

The five-disc DV-C660 DVD player that comes bundled with the DTX-3000 offers such features as progressive scan technology and Yamaha's Play Exchange. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Yamaha Play Exchange, meanwhile, lets you insert a new disc into the rotating five-disc carousel while another is still playing, so you never have to miss a moment of music. And though the player isn't compatible with every digital format on the books, it does offer support for the essentials: DVD-Video, DVD+R/RW, Video CD, Super Video CD, CD-Audio, CD-R/RW, and MP3 CD.

At the heart of the DTX-3000 system, however, is the 6.1 channel HTR-5740 A/V home theater receiver. While the muscle is impressive (100 watts per channel of discrete amplification), the brains stand out as well, with a 192 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converter and Yamaha's 32-bit Cinema DSP processing, which makes movies and music sound thrilling and realistic. The system also offers 29 surround modes that let you shape the audio specifics of your favorite DVDs and CDs to suit the genre or your personal taste. And finally, the system stands ready to decode all the major surround formats, including DTS-ES Discrete, Dolby Digital EX, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx.

The receiver includes four digital inputs (three optical and one coaxial), along with two component video inputs, three S-video inputs, and one S-video output. For temporary connections, the HTR-5740 also includes a set of front panel A/V inputs. Finally, the Silent Cinema mode lets you enjoy private listening of 6.1 channel surround sound with ordinary headphones.
