Customer Reviews of Y2k Family Survival Guide
Truth Be Told.... I bought this video at a Gun and Knife show (not here at Amazon) and was told that it was supposed to air on the Discovery Channel but was banned because it's so truthful. True, the video builds up all sorts of potential Y2K disasters which could scare you, however, it does give many reasons why and how this whole crisis could've been at least tackled in the last decade - NOT by waiting until 1999 to Band-Aid the whole computer industry. I was more mad than scared. The Information Technology 'powers that be' have no good excuse for their failure to fix this problem, and this video tells it like it is! The video does make the government seem like liars and that they are white-washing their Y2K readiness disclosures. Only time will tell...and keep your weapons handy.
Overwhelming as new info, not quite enough for the informed.
Great effort, alot of work, but Not for the whole family! Intense music and high-tech effects build-up the beginning 3/4 of this film to a point that could frighten a child or the elderly. The brief sound-bites from Y2K experts were not carried out far enough in a real life setting to be understood by persons learning about y2k. On the flip side, because of the lack of complete segments, the info might not be taken seriously by the doubting Thomas.
All in all, if you are using this video with an introduction and hand-outs, and you close with more in-depth preparedness info, this could still be a very inexpensive, and valuable tool. I thank the people who put it together for not charging an outrageous price, and providing a good visual source of info for the public.
Some points to consider: Less time should have been focused on the "Art" side of this film, and more time on the issue.
The last quarter of the film was quickly transitioned into a low-tech, survival mode. It did not provide enough time for any detailed info for preparedness. There also was no info on how to help your community prepare.
If the production team had allocated the majority of the budget to the issue, ...(I love Leonard Nimoy, but I'm sure he cost a bundle! and he may actually give a sci-fi appearance to the very real nature of this problem.) ...this could have been "the" exceptional documentary on this very real, and very serious crisis facing our nation. Please do some follow segments to complete this effort.
A Pretty Decent Effort
I tend to procrastinate quite a bit, and just got around to watching this. It gives a sobering perspective of what happened just two short years ago. Now that society has essentially broken down, the advice in this video is a must have. I deducted two stars because Nimoy didn't wear Spock ears. I would have taken it much more seriously, as Spock never engaged in hyperbole. Also, without the Spock ears, Nimoy was unable to calculate probabilities with any substantive accuracy. Had Nimoy engaged in such shoddy work aboard the Enterprise, Kirk would have been dead early in the series, and there would have been no one available to gallavant through space kissing alien women while speaking in halting dramatic speech.
