Customer Reviews of Xbox Nation
Fluff, and infrequent fluff at that. I bought one copy of this magazine at the newstand. For some reason, I thought that the Official XBox Magazine was published by Microsoft (I was wrong). So, I wanted something independent. I came away from this issue (happened to be the one with Prince of Persia pictured here) disappointed. The articles were too light and the content not very interesting. The layout was boring also. It is also unfortunate that this magazine is only published every two monthes.
Thinking Outside the Xbox
This is probably the best of the Xbox specialist magazines. While that isn't really saying a lot, it really is a notch above the standard for the game console genre. Yes, a significant number of pages are dedicated to advertisements. But while those ads pay for the surprising print quality of this publications, they don't seem to bias the opinions of the contributors. In the issue I have at hand, there are over 60 reviews, and on a scale of 1 to 10, the average is about 5.5, which is remarkable in this business.
As I have already noted, print quality and presentation are excellent. But the most important factor is writing quality. Reviews and previews run from two page spreads to short three column inch blurbs, but the writer always manages to say enough to give you an idea of the nature of the game and its salient points and failures. In the gaming world sensible, non-hyped writing is a rarity. Since costly buying decisions hang on review quality, the price of a magazine can quickly pay for itself.
As with all magazines, I encourage you to pick up a copy and look for yourself. But if you have to depend on the advice of a single Xbox publication, this is probably your best source.
Another redesign, another failure.
First off, the reason I give them 4 stars, is because they are so humorous, and that's the only thing saving them, with their new redesign. They just launched their redesign with the April issue (#13), and it's not that cool. I liked them better in the old format, cause at least hardly any of the pages were colorful, meaning text u could actually read (black text on white background). They give actual pictures of the editors, which for better or worse, is good. Rather than the caricatures they used to give. They have gone monthly now, so that really helps and is another reason to give them 4 stars, rather than 3. And apparently, since they're montly now, they're have more up-to-date content, and more exclusive and first reviews. Anyway, those 2 things really help them (the humor and the now monthly thing), and that's really about it. Hope this helped.
