Customer Reviews of Xavier and the Letter X (Alphabet Friends)
Introducing beginning readers to the mysterious letter "X" When you get to the letter "X" in the Alphabet Friends series I suppose there really is no other name to use in the title than the one Cynthia Klingel and Robert B. Noyed come up with for "Xavier and the Letter X." This 24-page book helps beginning readers master letter recognition by providing an entertaining story that manages to work a particular letter into the simple text. In "Xavier and the Letter X" a young box named Xavier gets a box that comes all the way from Texas. Young readers will see how the letter "x" can come at the beginning of words like "X ray," in the middle of words like "taxicab," and at the end of words like "mailbox." First they learn the difference between a capital "X" and a lowercase "x," which is really only a question of size. Throughout the book words starting with the letter "x" are highlighted, with rebus drawings appearing above them.
The goal of the Alphabet Friend series is for beginning readers to eventually be able to read these books on their own. The back of the book contains Fun Facts about x-rays and xylophones, as well as suggestions for young kids to read more about those topics in books appropriate to their age level. This is a great idea because there is only so much about the letter "x" you can work into one of these books, and you want beginning readers to be inspired to keep on reading. Since only the words that begin with an "X" are highlighted, there are plenty more to be found and the back of the book contains columns including all such words. Of course, for all those young kids named Xavier this book will be special because their name appears in the title, which has to be a rare occurrence indeed and therefore something to be treasured.
