Computer-generated visuals bring 10 X-Men home in their latex comic book costumes, as well as their leather movie duds. In addition to those characters featured in the movie, Mutant Academy also puts Beast and Gambit at players' disposal. (Rogue, however, is a no-show.)
The fighting system for Mutant Academy is built around three special move meters, which can be built up during battle. Once the special meter is filled, you can use your newly acquired moves to perform wild displays of combat skills. Uniquely, the power from one meter can be transferred to another, giving players an added strategic advantage while fighting. The game plays fast and takes skill to master, though it relies more heavily on special moves than combos. Still, it ranks right up there with Capcom's best. --Robb Guido

My General Rule.. Never buy a movie based game... But there are exceptions to every rule. The lack of a true combo system makes the fighting seem somewhat sluggish, especially since most moves take very little damage. But the characters are easy to use with a little practice, and before long you'll have mastered your favorite mutant. The Acadamy mode is a great addition to allow you to learn your character, but interpreting what it is telling you can sometimes be a task. (Shows a back arrow, forward arrow, then square; but doesn't tell you to charge back then press forward :(
But dispite the obvious drawbacks, this is a really good game and not as frustrating as some other titles where the special moves are almost impossible to perform.
The ending taunts are sometimes corny, and get annoying after awhile, but in the end: Great graphics, Good Gameplay, Really Pulls you in, tons of extras to unlock (although most don't effect the game).
In short, Grab a friend and play!
Excellent Fighting Game!
X-men Mutant Academy is a pretty cool 2-D fighter with with 3-D rendered characters. It plays a little bit like the Street Fighter Series but its gameplay is excellent. Each character has their own strengths and each are pretty fun to play with. Each character has a variety of Super Moves (some of which I am still trying to figure out). The characters are Storm, Wolverine, Cyclops, Gambit, Phoenix, Beast, Sabretooth, Mystique, Toad, and Magneto. Although the number of characters you can use is small, its still a very fun game to play.
The graphics are excellent. There are different scenes behind every battle such as the Danger Room, the Bayou..aka Gambit etc. Each character has very cool voice overs which are played at the end of each battle.
Bottomline, where this title is not as stong as the Tekken Series, it is still a very fun fighter for the Playstation! Its excellent graphics, sound and gameplay will have you coming back for more and more. This one is well worth a purchase!
