WWII Fighters is beautiful to behold. Planes are modeled in great detail--when viewing your plane through the external views you can watch the flight surfaces respond to your commands and see the pilot in the cockpit crane his neck to track targets. Inside the cockpit everything is modeled in 3-D, and you can even adjust your virtual seat to get a better view over the instrument panel. We marveled at the real-time lighting effects, watching the orange rays of the setting sun glint off our wings as we twisted through the sky. It's a treat to watch tracers fly and bombs flash on the ground during a pitched nighttime battle.
The flight model in this simulation is very forgiving, and it is nearly impossible to stall, but that doesn't detract too much from the excitement of a dogfight. The damage model is particularly impressive, making it possible to whittle an enemy plane to pieces with near-surgical precision. A shot in the right place will do anything from severing a rudder control wire to causing an entire engine to explode. Just remember that it works both ways.
There are more realistic WWII flight simulators available, but few are as fun or as graphically appealing as this one. Novices and virtual pilots of intermediate skill will enjoy the fact that they spend more time fighting enemy aircraft than fighting their own controls, and WWII aficionados will love the CD-ROMs' historical content, which includes such goodies as interviews with aces like Francis Gabreski and Günther Rall. --T. Pros:
- Outstanding graphics--damage and explosions are rendered especially well
- Booming sound effects
- Ability to fly a variety of planes
- Forgiving arcadelike flight model with no real stalls

Customer Reviews of World War 2: Fighters
Finally, an ACCURATE and DETAILED World War II flight sim! Despite its age JANES WWII FIGHTERS continues to surpass the current flight simulators with this World War II Fighters package. Having played numerous flight sims over the past two decades I have NEVER witnessed such detailed and startling graphics. Missions are 'historially accurate,' and staged around "The Battle of the Bulge" campaign. But WWII FIGHTERS is not just a normal flight sim. The player has the opportunity to fly =detailed= models of the ME-262, FW-190, ME-109, P-38, P-51 and P-47. I have YET [2002] to find a more detailed flight sim for these aircraft. Campaign and single mission episodes include both ground and air attack missions. Among the scores of Allied and Axis armor in this sim you will see detailed models of Flakwagons, Tigers, Panthers, Shermans, halftracks, trucks and horse drawn artillery. Allied and Axis airstrips and train depots are also primary targerts. Attacking a formation of B-17's or B-24's in an FW-190 at 12 o'clock high is heart thumping. Options include "heads-up only" modes for gun sighting and a "target window" screen to augment the lack of radar identification--an incredible addition. Battle damaged models fly with authentic battle damaged characteristics.
The game is terrific but it does have its setbacks. One problem -- and its a doosy -- is that the "Battle of the Bulge" campaign, although historically accurate, is the only period covered with five or six months of scenarios. This may be due=hopefully=to a possible Janes campaign upgrade in the future.
Another disappointment is the lack of the FW-190D(DORA), an excellent aircraft which was prevalent throughout the entire Bulge campaign.
Despite the minimal glitches with this sim it continues to capture gamers that desire detailed, authentic and accurate WWII flying models. AWAITING AN UPGRADE!
The Best !
This is the best WW2 air combat sim on the market.
Even it's 2 years old, it still rocks, particularly in high resolutions and color depths. I use 1280*1024 in 32-bit /GeForceDDR accelerator/, visuals are terrific. Gameplay rocks! 3rd party mission editors are available as well.
I'm finding the action most interesting in 1/2 slow motion and all help feratures /targeting boxes, labels etc./ turned off. All difficulty maxed out, as well as graphics.
I used to preffer MS Combat Flight Simulator or European Air War; since I fitted my PC with a 3D card which can handle the graphics at it's full, this game is just ultimate experience; I re-discovered it for myself this year, and play only WW2 Fighters since.
Recommend to everyone!
My system: PII400/128MB RAM, 32MB GeForceDDR 3D Prophet
There's better stuff out there
It's a good game, for 1997 standard. There are no training missions, and its way to easy. I dont know how to desribe the flight model, exept that its not so good.
You never know where your wingmen are, and there are no wingman commands. Also, the ground objects look bland and boring. The guns look pretty unrealistic too (so why did I buy it? it was on sale for [X]).
However, If you are an oassional user and dont are so much about realism, this is for you.
If I were you, and wanted a good WWII sim, I would get IL-2 Sturmovik or MS Combat Flight Simulator 1&2.
