Stadiums and players are rendered in glorious high-resolution detail, to the point where it's easy to recognize a player by looking at his face. Similarly, most of the animations look terrific--especially diving catches and quick across-the-body throws. We also enjoyed the pitching and batting interface, which is more complex than that found in most baseball games but becomes a lot of fun after a little practice.
Unfortunately, the game is all downhill from there. Once a ball is hit, players are forced to sit and watch the computer field it. The lack of control is absolutely infuriating, especially since Sega hyped this game's realism from the beginning of its development. The crowd sounds are anemic and there is no color commentary, which is just as well considering how terrible the play-by-play announcer is. If you really love baseball, you'll really hate World Series Baseball 2K1. For casual fans who prefer flashy graphics and a fun pitching/batting contest to thorough stat tracking and the ability to field the ball, this game is a home run. --T. Byrl Baker

Customer Reviews of World Series Baseball 2K1
How this game maintains a 4 star rating we may never know... I expected a lot from Sega as they have delivered on almost every account of the "World Series Baseball" series (no pun intended). Also with the Dreamcast finally deciding to show its true ability, I saw stills of this game and was in awe. This very quickly ended as I first played the game. Oh my god, yes the graphics are amazing. That is where it ends. Players are detailed and stadiums are replicated down to the upperdeck chairs. But this cant save the game. The control is quirky at best, batting is a real hastle. Hmm, perhaps defense will be better. No, quite the contrary. There is absolutely no fielding whatsoever. The ball flys in the air and the computer moves a player to the spot then u decide which base to throw too. Sound like fun? Didnt think so. Lets go try another mode. HA! No extra mode for you! We are presented with exhibition and season. Oh well, lets try playing a season with some of our friends. Nope, cant play on the same team as a friend. With lack of extras, poor control and lack of it as well, and no team playing, this game avois a 1 star with its amazing graphics. This game is horrid to play and I strongly suggest playing Tommy Lasorda Baseball for Sega Genesis over this game. At least you can field....
What was Sega thinking?
I wish that I used to review games as a job because the only way I can play World Series Baseball 2K1 is if I were paid to do it!!
What the?
This game to start out, looks great! Aside from looking great it may possibly rival early Nintendo versions for the worst MLB game ever made. First, you are introduced to the pitchers. They give you a small detail about the pitcher but no season statistics, so you do not know what you are up against. Secondly, to bat, you release the right trigger to swing. You are forced to use the analog thumb pad also.
At the end of the game, it tells you the winner, the loser, if there was a save & the homeruns. NO BOXSCORE!!!??? I don't know about the majority but I like to base my players starting status on two things. 1. Reality (the correct rosters) 2. Game to game statistics. If a player is slacking you have no way of knowing. You can't check in the middle of the game to see what the player is batting on the game. And if you want to change pitchers, you must also call it blind, as they provide no information as to what your players' ERAs might be. Usually games will tell you when a player steps up to bat, how they have faired in that particular game, along with season stats. Here they only provide season stats. I would like a 1-1 today, 2 for 3, etc.
This game is not fun. I gave it 2 stars because it looks good. Don't bother buying this game. It will only frustrate you, unless you care nothing for real game play.
