A solid, but unspectacular record
I think the other reviewers here are wildly overrating this album. It certainly has its good moments (as any Kinks record does), but there is a lot of uninspired stuff, also. "Too Hot", for instance, is really pretty awful and several other tracks fall into the pleasant, but dull category. All in all, I think both "Give the People" and "State of Confusion" are far superior to this record, particularly "State of Confusion."

The Dave Davies numbers here, though, are two of his better contributions to any Kinks album. Also, the live version of "Living On A Thin Line" found on the out-of-print "The Road" is far superior to the studio version on "Word of Mouth." Look for it at your local used cd store.

Under rated masterpiece finally available on cd again!`
Of all their 70's and 80's work Word Of Mouth and State Of Confusion both stand up well to their classic work. Do It Again opens with the same crashing guitar chord as The Beatles' A Hard Day's Night, but ventures into a completely different direction. There are witty musical references to The Beatles throughout the album both lyrically and melodically.

That said, this album would be great without the Beatles references. The songwriting is consistent and strong. Dave turns in two of his best songs for the album. Living On A Thin Line was originally written for Ray to sing, but Dave, in excellent voice (and singing in a lower register) does a terrific job. Kudos guys! Thanks for making this available again!

kinks for kinks
You know, my uncle Curtis just love this album, but he have it on record and not cd. To me and my sister it sound kind of lame but he play it so much we just get used to listening to it. He won't let us play Staind or Puddle of Mudd or even my sisters Sugar Ray cd's. He gets depressed when we try to turn him on to new music. He even says: there is no good music past 1985. But my uncle live in a time warp. He puts tin foil on the windows to keep the sun from coming in. Me and my sitser stay at his house on weekend and we order pizza but my uncle doesn't have a lot of money so he buy his pizza from Al's Supa-Dupa Pizza downtown and it is made with cheap ingredents but he doesn't want us to starve and he tells Caitlyn: you don't want to get anorexia. He thought she was bolemic one night but she actually just got really sick on the Al's. My uncle listens to this album on Sunday morning because he say it makes him happy. The first song, "Do It Again" is the one that he is always lipsinking to with an upside down screwdriver. He never gets all the words right but its funny to watch his face when he sings along. He never shaves on the weekend and he goes around the house wearing a blue bathrobe that my other uncle gave him ten years ago. He loves that bathrobe. He turns up his Kinks really loud and the cat goes bonkers when my uncle Curtis get out his kazoo and tries to play along with the stero. But my uncle is really not very good on kazoo and the cat gets very angry. The cat jump on the table and slid across the newspapers and landed back on the floor again. But only after he spill my uncle's juice and it got in the carpet and my uncle got so mad at the cat. Every time my sister go outside to talk on her cellphone my uncle yells at her: don't let the cat go out- he will never come back! The cat has very thick hair and it shed on all the furniture and my uncle never cleans it up. Oh well. We're trying to get my uncle to take us to the beach but his skin is pale he says he will get a sunburn. He took us to the mall last weekend but got depressed that "all the kids have tattoos." So we promised him we won't get none and he laughed.
