Felix and Popeye are the Stars of the Collection
With a wide range of animation quality, this DVD has 4 Popeye, and 2 Felix the Cat episodes that are winners, as well as at least 3 others that are well worth this 2-hour collection. There are a few "fillers" and only 1 "Woody Woodpecker" despite the cover, but overall, it's a fine addition to one's classic cartoon library. The episode list: <
>1: "Pantry Panic" (1941), directed by Walter Lantz, animated by Alex Lovey and Lester Kline, music by Darrell Calker. Starving in mid-winter, Woody Woodpecker and Korny Kat chase each other around with knives with only one thought: Dinner. This was Mel Blanc's last cartoon for Universal Pictures (he moved to Warner Bros.), and his final "Woody" voice. Bad color deterioration to a pinkish shade. 3* <
>2: "Teacher's Pest" (1950), directed by Isadore Sparber, animated by Myron Waldman and Gordon Wittier, music by Winston Sharples for Famous Studios. Wolf disguises himself as a teacher to get Junior (an owl) into the soup pot. Fair color/definition. 3* <
>3: "The Land of the Lost" (1948), directed by Isadore Sparber, animated by Myron Waldman and Nick Tafuri, music by Winston Sharples. 1st of 3 in a series of "lost" episodes for Famous Studios. Red Lantern fishie guides a boy and a girl to an undersea land where everything lost on earth is located. Color deterioration to green/purple shades. 2* <

>4: "Swing Cleaning" (1941), directed by Dave Fleischer, animated by Willard Bowsky and Arnold Gillespie, music by Sammy Timberg for the Fleischer Studios. Features the ever bossy Gabby; when the king wants his castle cleaned, Gabby steps in with his "system," and creates total chaos. Some color deterioration. 3* <
>5: "A Haul in One" (1956), directed by Isadore Sparber, animated by Al Eugster and William Pattengill, music by Winston Sharples for Famous Studios. Popeye and Bluto help Olive Oyl move, and vie for her affections. Nice crisp color/definition. 4* <
>6: "Insect to Injury" (1956), directed by Dave Tendlar, animated by Morey Reden and Tom Moore for Famous Studios. Popeye finishes building his house, only to find that the termite army has attacked! Good color/definition. 4* <
>7: "Nearlyweds" (1957), directed by Seymour Kneitel, animated by Tom Johnson and Frank Endres, music by Winston Sharples for Famous Studios. Popeye and Bluto both want to marry Olive Oyl; Bluto does his worst to impede Popeye, but Popeye has the last word disguised as a "Justice of the Peace." Hilarious! Good color/definition. 5* <

>8: "Popeye the Sailor meets Sinbad the Sailor" (1936), directed by Dave Fleischer, animated by Willard Bowsky, George Germanetti and Ed Nolan, terrific music by Sammy Timberg, for Fleischer Studios. This is one of the all-time great classic cartoons, and is also the 1st Fleischer short to get an Oscar nomination, as well as the 1st Popeye episode in color. Sinbad (Bluto) kidnaps Olive Oyl, and takes her to his mysterious island, full of scary creatures. Popeye, along with J. Wellington Wimpy, go there to rescue her. A little deteriorated, as expected due to age. 5* <
>9: "Bold King Cole" (1936), directed by Burt Gillett, music by Winston Sharples, for the Van Beuren Studios. Felix the Cat gets struck by lightning, and acquires special powers. He helps the timid King Cole with his ghost problem. Exceptional color/definition. 5* <
>10: "The Goose that Laid the Golden Egg" (1936), directed by Burt Gillett, nifty Winston Sharples score, for Van Beuren Studios. Felix the Cat and Goldie the Goose are philanthropic with Goldie's eggs, until Goldie gets goosenapped by Captain Kidd. Felix to the rescue! Excellent color/definition. 5* <

>11: "The Cheese Burglar" (1946), directed by Isadore Sparber, animated by Jim Tyler, Ben Solomon, and William Henning, music by Winston Sharples for Famous Studios. Herman the mouse tries to get to the icebox, which is guarded by the cat and dog, so he devises a devious plan. Color completely deteriorated on this one; I've seen better prints of it. 4* <
>12: "The Stupidstitious Cat" (1946), directed by Seymour Kneitel, animated by Graham Place, John Walworth, music by Winston Sharples for the Famous Studios. Buzzy the Crow taunts the superstitious cat, to get out of being eaten. This one is not "politically correct" but is a clever and very funny cartoon. Nice crisp color. 5* <
>13: "Hooked Bear" (1956), directed by Jack Hannah, animated by Bill Justice, Al Coe, Bob Carlson, and John Sibley; music by Oliver Wallace for the Walt Disney Studios. A bear trying to catch fish. This one is boring! Some deterioration. 2* <

>14: "Flop Goes the Weasel" (1943), directed by Chuck Jones, music by Carl Stalling for the Schlesinger Studios. Mel Blanc does the voices of both the Weasel and the Chick on this one. A brilliantly animated and hilarious cartoon, though very "politically incorrect". The big, bad weasel tries to get the newborn chick for dinner. Interesting angles and perspective in the way this one is drawn. excellent color/definition. 5* <
>15: "Fin 'n' Catty" (1943), directed by Chuck Jones, animated by Ben Washam, music by Carl Stalling for the Schlesinger Studios. A goldfish and a cat, eternal enemies, with water as their barrier. Cat tries to pass himself off as the "Filet Brush Man, Sole Agent." Some color/definition deterioration. 4* <
>16: "Susie the Little Blue Coupe" (1952), directed by Clyde Geronimi, animated by Ollie Johnson, Cliff Nordberg, Hal King, Bob Carlson, music by Paul Smith, and narrated by Sterling Holloway for Walt Disney Studios. The life and times of a car with a heart, with some sad moments, and some sweet ones. Nice color/definition. 4* <

cd was ok but only one woody cartoon in it. I purchased it thinking I will be able to see the woody gems back after 20 odd years but alas. just one woody cartoon and that too very crappy where woody appeared for less than 2 mins.
