Customer Reviews of Wood Conducts Vaughan Williams
Historically Valuable Recording Although this collection contains many historically important recordings of Vaughan Williams, I find the sound quality is not up to Dutton's usual audio magic. Much of it sounds distorted and does not contain many of the upper level frequencies Dutton usually pulls out of the grooves of these old 78 r.p.m. recordings. At the same time, the bass frequencies do resonate in abundance and their richness provides the redeeming virtue for this disc.
This collection is historically important because of the eminence of Sir Henry Wood as a musician of his day as well as his collaboration and relationship with the composer. Indeed, the 'Serenade to Music' is even dedicated to him on the occasion of his fifty years as a conductor. If you enjoy historical recordings, by all means, enjoy this one. At the time, do not expect the usual audio quality that one often hears from Dutton's historical releases.
A Treasure Of VW'S Music By One Of His Favorite Conductors
In the first half of the 20th Century Sir Henry Wood was one of England's great conductors whose reputation was world wide. He counted among his friends many British composers including Vaughan Williams. To celebrate Woods 50th anniversary as a conductor Vaughan Williams composed the Serenade To Music for him. Here Wood conducts the work with the original 15 singers (the most prominent of their day in England). It is a lovely work and so is the performance . Dutton nicely indicates in the texts who sings what.
The London Symphony (no.2) is given a brisk (as the composer wanted) performance that captures the elegiac spirit of the piece. It should be noted that this edition is not the one usually heard today. VW gradually trimmed this work over 2 decades. The original first version was recently recorded by Hickox on Chandos. The version Wood uses is the 2nd one that while shorter than the original is still longer than the published version. The chimes of Big Ben on the harp stand out much more than usual because Wood , when conducting this work, always placed them in front of the strings.
The cd is filled out with spirited performances of The Wasps Overture and Greensleeves performed not as some languid pastorale but as a spirited folk dance. These recordings were made in 1936 and 1938. They of course cannot match more modern ones but once again Dutton Labs have worked wonders with the material to give a clear and full bodied recording. The whole cd is a treasure for lovers of Vaughan Williams music allowing them to hear performances by one of the composer's favorite conductors.
