The lengthy air campaign over Vietnam is expertly chronicled in this installment of the Wings Collection from Discovery Channel. Focusing on particular planes, including the F-4 Phantom, F-105 Thunderchief, and the massive B-52 bomber, this documentary examines how air crews and strategists used highly technological hardware in what turned out to be a futile effort. Some techniques worked well, such as close air support of ground forces, but other strategies faltered. As one war correspondent remarks, "We were trying to bomb bicycles with B-52s." As befits the odd circumstances of the Vietnam war, this video portrays the conflicts between the "bomber generals" and the strategists in Washington who "micromanaged" the air campaign. Interviews with pilots, including Senator John McCain, who was shot down over Hanoi in 1967 and taken prisoner, provide insights into the peculiar way the air war was conducted. Some targets were declared off-limits and by the time American pilots were allowed to attack them, diabolical "flak traps" took a massive toll on U.S. air crews. The air war over Vietnam will always remain controversial, and this very professional video succeeds in providing a balanced and intelligent look at the lengthy conflict's airplanes, pilots, and strategic successes and failures. --Robert J. McNamara
