Customer Reviews of Wine Enthusiast
good for the price I have a subscription to Wine Enthusiast. I managed to find a one year subscription (14 issues) for 6 bucks! Given how little I pay for it, it is educational and has a extensive buying guide at the end of every issue. While I enjoy the Wine Spectator, it is much more expensive (50 bucks for a year's subscription) and I couldn't justify paying that much since it is only slightly better.
mediocre magazine, Co. has horrible customer service

>I am extremely disappointed with The Wine Enthusiast. Although their magazine is ok, their products are overpriced, and their customer service is horrendous. I never actually got through to a customer service rep, and was on hold for 50 minutes at one point before I hung up. Below is a paragraph from a letter I sent them regarding their latest debacle with me:
<
>"On December 10 I ordered a special gift for my husband, expecting it to take some extra time to be delivered since I chose to ship it by UPS ground. When December 18 rolled around and I had not yet received an email notifying me of the status of my order, I checked it online. It still had not been shipped. I immediately emailed customer service stating my concern. I received the automated response email assuring me that I would receive a reply to my email within 24 hours. Well, two days later I had still had not heard anything. So, I checked my account again to see what was going on. Apparently, my package had been shipped on December 18. I followed the tracking number to see the shipping status, and, apparently, UPS had not received any account information until December 18.

>Coincidence? I think not."

>I am not going to renew my subscription or deal with this company and its associates anymore. If you have respect for the consumer, you'll do the same.

>Update:
<
>The Senior Director of Operations called me and apologized profusely for my maltreatment. They are handling the incompetence of their Customer Service reps, and have reordered my product free of charge (and are sending it by FedEx, since I am boycotting UPS). So, I'll give them one more point.

Affordable & adequate --- better as an introductory source than anything else
As the other reviewers have observed, this is definitely not a magazine for the serious collector, if for no other reason than the quantity of wines being reviewed is relatively small, and without good comparison to other vintages among other things. The articles are nice enough, but without much depth. Most aspects of this magazine would tend appeal more to the neophyte, which is fair enough. It helps that it is relatively inexpensive.

>For those who are just getting their feet wet, one should note that the editorial slant tends towards wines with a more acidic presence (as opposed to the fruit bombs favored by Parker). This might make one assume that the Wine Enthusiast staff falls squarely in line with the wine establishment in the UK, but while reading the reviews, it is apparent from the occasional shot at British critics that the editors hew their own line in this regard. Mostly it becomes a question of whether or not you, as a wine drinker, are an acidhound or instead prefer a fruit-dominated wine.
