Customer Reviews of Windows 95 Networking Secrets (Secrets S.)
Far too General For a more advanced user, I found this book far too general. Windows 95 Networking Secrets covers many things that I found to be useless. Others may find it useful, but I would rather buy another book on these topics. Some of the topics that I thought shouldn't be included are: Installing Windows 95, Understanding Windows 95 Installations, Installing Windows 95 with Networking, Connecting to the Microsoft Network, Using the Microsoft Network, and Setting up Microsoft Exchange and Fax. While these might be useful for some users, I found them to be a waste.
Another thing that bugged me is how slowly the author proceeded from one topic to another. Each topic seemed to drag out over many pages and included a lot of screenshots that weren't really necessary.
I could recommend this book to a new Windows 95 user, but not anyone that is quite familiar with Windows 95 and the Internet.
Networking a small business workgroup...do it with Win 95
If you are in the market for a SB (Small Business) NOS (network operating system)then I'd suggest you read this book first.
This book takes Windows 95 Networking from the ground up; beginning with the varios methods of installing Win 95; so that you get the whole picture of what your varios options are to fully utilize the networking capabilities of Win 95.
The author does a real in-depth accounting and review of nearly every detail related to Win 95 networking, including of course the clients & protocols provided with Win 95. A real break for Networking AS WELL as Win 95 "newbies". Nearly 800 pages of that!
This should be a real help for people looking at the varios NOS's on the market for small networks.
The author goes on to discuss the various networking applications on the market (at time of print '96)such as Novell Netware, OS/2, & Artisoft Lantastic for Win 95 and how to implement them with Win 95.
With the "SECRETIVE" way that Microsoft? has dealt with the Win 95 networking capabilities, this is a real winner.
Book is supplied with a CD-ROM with some Utilities, IBM DOS LAN Services for Win 95, Novell Netware Client 32 for Win 95, & some other trial version software. At the time of this review these utilities have been replaced with newer versions, making the CD "semi-usefull".
