Customer Reviews of Wide Spaces Swing Gate
Tough to install but a great gate We have a open living room/dining room/kitchen set-up and we wanted our son to be able to play in the living room but to stay out of the dining room/kitchen. The opening we needed to gate off is 107 inches and this was the only gate (wide spaces gate and 3 extentions) we could find that did the trick and we didn't have to spend a small fortune on. Because of the add-on panels adjustable bracket feature I can have it set up so that the gate curves around the end of the dining room table. I can also remove the whole gate in about a second without any tools when entertaing guests.
When I tried to install this gate it took me 3 hours and I still needed to call my hasband to help a few times. It's impossible to do alone. For this reason I am giving it 4 stars and not 5.
I have been using this gate every day, multiple times a day, for 6 mths now and it has never fallen on my son even with him shaking it like crazy. I love it and highly recommend it.
Gate great, instructions bad
My husband and I spent about 1.5 hours installing this gate. We made a point of taking our time because of the negative reviews on Amazon (which really appear to be lack of common sense, rather than product malfuntion). I'm not sure why so many people have had problems with it, although we did not have to use any additional "add-on" pieces (maybe that would make it more difficult). We intalled the gate at an angle very similar to the one in the Amazon picture because we have an angled entry, and it works great and is very tight and secure.
You definitely have to attach both ends to a wall stud, which means you'll need a stud finder. You'll also need to be competent with an electric drill. You also definitely need two people for assembly, simply because one needs to hold the pieces while the other wields the drill. Ours was missing a few of the pre-drilled holes; not a big deal for us, but I wonder if they're all that way. Also, we tried using the measurements in the directions and it came up almost an inch off of what seemed like the "common sense" length (we remeasured and recalculated several times). So we disregarded the measurement directions and simply held the gate up to the wall to see what length to adjust it to.
This probably sounds confusing to anyone who hasn't purchased the gate yet: basically the gate expands in the same way as a pressure-mounted gate does, only you permenantly fix it at that position by screwing the two pieces together. You then attach it to the wall and use a built-in hinge door mechanism to walk through it. Apparently a lot of people have had trouble creating a tight fit, probably because the measurement instructions in the manual come up about three quarters of an inch shy. The directions have you measure your opening and then subtract 24.375" (the supposed length of one panel plus hinges and latches) to determin how much overlap there should be between the two panels. In reality, a single panel plus hinges and latches measures a bit less. I suggest simply holding the gate up before you screw the two pieces together to make sure the fit is right.
I also have a lot of trouble squeezing the handle hard enough to open the gate, but my husband has no trouble at all. Maybe it's just me and my weak wrists.
I liked this gate...
This was the only gate we could find for our large opening from kitchen to living room Although it does take some work to put it together, if done properly it works great! We never had a problem with it popping open or falling over on our child-she would even try to stand on the bottom in between the slats and hold onto the top!! In the beginning the latch is a little difficult to open, but once you get used to it, it's fine. I would rather have it difficult than too easy!
