Customer Reviews of Who Do You Love
Rounder Years Anthology "Who Do You Love" is a summary of George Thorogood's early work with the Rounder label. This disk can be seen as sort of a companion piece to the "The Baddest of George Thorogood and the Destroyers". There are only three cuts which overlap the other set. "Who Do You Love", "Move It On Over" and "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer". While "Who Do You Love" does not contain any of Thorogood's originals like "Bad To The Bone" the disk contains a number of high energy cover tunes. In addition only 5 (9 if you consider the live versions on "Anthology") of the versions of tunes on this 16 tune set are found on the "Anthology" two disk set. Aside from the aforementioned cuts other highlights include a great cover of Bo Diddley's "Ride On Josephine", a cover of the Strangelove's garage classic "Night Time", Muddy Waters' "Bottom Of The Sea", and a number of slashing Elmore James' covers such as "Madison Blues", "Can't Stop Lovin'", "The Sky Is Crying" and "New Hawaiian Boogie". A couple of favorites were missed like covers of Hound Dog Taylor's "I Just Can't Make It", Chuck Berry's "It Wasn't Me" and Muddy Waters' "The Same Thing" but the disk also contains an unissued live version of "Who Do You Love" from 1979. The set is about 70 minutes so it would have been interesting if more unissued live cuts were included. Thorogood's aggressive slide guitar playing is never far from front on this set. "Who Do You Love" illustrates not only the beginnings of Thorogood's career but also his influences which he wears on his sleeve. Thorogood's combination of blues and boogie is infectious and hopefully will lead people to further investigation of the original versions of some of the songs on this set.
"Thorogood's band is the tightest in the business"
If you're looking for a great party album this is the one and "Who Do You Love?", featuring George Thorogood really grabbed me from the opening track "CAN'T STOP LOVIN'", when George sings and plays, all the raw power and energy comes through. Either you're a fan or not...but listen to the next cue "MOVE IT ON OVER", the classic Hank Williams tune, takes on a whole new meaning. His album rocks from the beginning to the end. Is this what rock n' roll is all about? The entire album is inspiring...take a listen to "MADISON BLUES", Thorogood's raunchy slide guitar style blends Muddy Waters, Houndog Taylor and Elmore James into one electrifing performance, each bridge is pulsating.
George plays every track with a fire and passion that is all his own, just crank up the volume and let er' rip. His band is one of the tightest in the business, listen as Jeff Simon (drums), Ron Smith (second guitar), Billy Blough (bass), Uncle Meat Pennington (tambourine/maracas) and Hank Carter (saxophone), take on "WHO DO YOU LOVE?", the title song by E. McDaniel is contagious beyond all words, Thorogood is completely in his element.
Rounder gives the listener a little Chuck Berry mixed with Bo Diddley, not to mention John Lee Hooker in the guise of George Thorogood "ONE BOURBON, ONE SCOTCH, ONE BEER", reminiscent of the Hooker days with great storytelling to pay the rent. Everyone to the dance floor with "NEW HAWAIIAN BOOGIE", this is much more than a toe tapping tune, get ready for some fancy footwork.
We close the album with "WHO DO YOU LOVE?"(live version), is a previously unreleased cue recorded live at the Palomino, Hollywood, California on April 22, 1979...this track puts a nice big red ribbon on an already collectable package, gotta love it!
