Whispermoon shouts out to its Listeners
Listener came to my university (Clemson University in S.C.) for a show in late September 2003 and I immediately felt in touch with his brash and upfront rhymes. After the show I made a beeline to Listener to talk to him about his music etc. A very interesting chat was shared as we talked about the current state of American popular music in relation to the "underground" hiphop/rap of artists such as himself. Summary: The Present but Fleeting vs. Present but Lasting, respectively. And Whispermoon is indeed a lasting piece of work... Maybe it won't make the top 40 chart and maybe in 5 years very few people will still have heard of Listener, but I think in the long term scheme of popular music, Whispermoon will represent an important era of American underground thinking and worldview, not to mention sound. Lyrically, Listener reminds me of Mr. LIF but trading fierce anti-war/Bush political mindedness for modern social awareness and insight (quite searing at times). I swear I hear some Dr. Doom-like background beats- though Listener really could go accopelo and in fact he did so during the show. Sadly the accopelo he did- a crafty and witty love-smattered paragraph of quite possibly a letter (dot). (dot). (dot) .punctuation included and indeed articulated-- did not make the Whispermoon cut. I think this piece will appear on his next album. And indeed I am eagerly anticipating his next album after I happened to - by chance- stumble onto a Listener in concert and purchase his album after the show...a $10 well spent. Thanks again Dan (Listener), Sincerely Brian Reburn.
