What IS Eating Gilbert Grape
Endora, Iowa, there's no such place. There is no place that could be deserted and useless as a place like that. This is a phrase that I suspect many readers think when they read this book. They believe that it's not possible to live and survive in a town as small as Endora. Riding your bike, FOR FUN! No way, bring me the computer and video games. But it's true. Cities like this are very common in Iowa and this book brings out the realities of this small town.
I gave this book 5 stars. The author Peter Hedges does a great job bringing out the story, as well as portraying small town life in Iowa. He takes a dynamic yet weird family and makes it comical. He also ties in love and romance which makes the book attract to all audiences for the duration of the book. Setting it down and taking a break is not an option. This is the story of Gilbert Grape. His heartache and anger are both felt throughout this book. The other main characters in the book are Arnie, his retarded brother and his mother who is so fat the floor is about to cave in beneath her. The story also concerns friendship with his friends Turner and Bobby. Readers beware; this book is so addicting that you can not put this book down.
Do you want comedy, romance, drama? This book has them all. What's Eating Gilbert Grape is a must read for EVERYONE! You won't regret it.

Don't Judge This Book by it's Title
I'm not sure what attracted me to this book...certainly not the title. But,I was totally caught up in the Grape family and all the idiosyncrasies that being a "Grape" entailed. Gilbert Grape tells the story about the workings of this peculiar family in a most hilarious way. His thoughts are a scream. The description by the author of the way Gilbert "sees" his mother had me in stitches. The scene when they all leave the house with "Momma" to get Arnie out of jail is priceless. The visual was like watching a movie. My heart ached for Gilbert...from his amazing loyalty to his retarded brother, working to support his chain smoking, morbidly obese mother and other siblings...he was the hero of the story albeit in a quirky sort of way. Read this book! This story is easily relived in Anywhere USA. Unfortunately I could relate to some of it! Peter Hedges has a gift of writing sad, sick, dysfunction, with a humorous slant that is captivating.

What's eating Gilbert Grape is now one of my most treasured reads.It's written with such humanity that you can relate to the feelings and thoughts of Gilbert and the other characters.Gilbert is living in a remote town called Endora in Iowa with his family and he seems bored.He tells us about life in Endora and how his life suddenly changes when a strange girl comes travelling through the town. Its a comical and emotional rollercoaster of feelings that can only be described as wonderful. If you liked A member of the wedding you may well enjoy this.
