Since it's only a matter of time before any preschooler plagued by a healthy case of the whys gets around to inquiring as to the origins of the front shrubs, the light-on-fun, heavy-on-learning video What's Behind the Hedge? is, at worst, a handy reference to have around. At best, it's a tool teeming with useful terms and age-appropriate explanations for budding agribuffs. Sammy the Shrub, a kelly-green cartoon glob, peeks in on the action from the corner of the screen at opportune times--to exclaim "P.U.!" while pinching his shrub nose, for example, when, during subsoiling, tons of manure are being mixed into the planting field. Sammy leads the way through propagation, irrigation, fertilization, etc., all the way to transportation to the local nursery, where landscapers make off with the nicely manicured minitrees to replant them in what will become their permanent homes. Tikes exhibiting early tree-hugging tendencies will like this video, and so will machinery-mad kids: not only does it showcase the de rigueur dump truck, it also trots out the more exotic terragator, as well as a bobcat and other construction vehicles, all with fully detailed commentary about their place in the shrub-growing scheme of things. For some, the idea of owning a video on hedges will come off as mildly ridiculous, bordering on the hilarious. But shelling out the money for this tape seems less so when you consider who benefits: proceeds go to Orphan Relief, a charity that helps feed hungry children the world over. --Tammy La Gorce
