Customer Reviews of Wes Craven's New Nightmare
Disappointing! Ok, Dont get me wrong this was an ok movie but it just didnt have a high enough body count. The suspense was there and so was most of the other elements of a horror movie. The idea of a movie in a movie was a brilliant idea by horror king Wes Craven. What really suprised me about this film was that Freddy wasnt even in the movie that much it concentrated more on character development, which I thought was a big no no. I mean when people go to watch a nightmare on elm street movie they pay to see freddy kill a bunch of half wit teenagers in unusually gruesome ways. Well not in this movie kiddies. In fact the unusual low body count in this film I think was 4 people. And the deaths had all been done in previous Nightmare films (ex when the baby sitter gets clawed and dragged up the wall. That same scene happened to a girl named tina in the first part) Fans of the previous Freddy movies may even find themselves falling asleep on this one. But for those who like a good scary movie without a lot of gore may like this. Rated R for very little violence.
Best of the Nightmare series!
I first saw this movie on HBO an ordered the DVD soon after. In fact, it was the film that really turned me on to the Nightmare series. It stars Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund, and Jhon Saxton, all of whom played in the original Nightmare and returned to play themselves. I loved almost everything about this film, especialy the awsome upgrade they gave Freddy. It was directed by Wes Craven, The creator of the series and the best director to ever make a horror film. It was a nice change from the other Freddy flicks. The plot could have been better though. the whole idea that Freddy was actually an ancient demon seemed stupid. Another thing I didn't follow was the little boy that played Heather Langenkamp's son who kept getting possesed by the demon. It just didn't fit with the film. Other than that, this was a great movie. I loved the way it trys to parallel the first Nightmare film. And it was the scariest one out of the entire Nightmare series. It was a well balanced production with a little action, a little gore, and no stupid love scenes. And this is the only one that shows Freddy the way he should be; a demonic phsyco killer. It is a more frightning, more demonic Nightmare film that will keep you on the edge of your seat! It was a perfect way to end to best horror series ever procuced. so if you are a Freddy fan, I would highly reccomend this exellent movie.
Finally, a somewhat scary 'Nightmare'!
It took 'em seven tries, but they finally put out a 'Nightmare' that was kinda scary. And setting in the 'real world' was a great angle for the principals-- including 'Nightmare' 1 & 3 star Heather Langenkamp as the focal character, along with Robert Englund, New Line producer Bob Shaye and director Wes Craven in supporting roles-- to play off of. I also liked its relatively low cheeseball factor compared to the previous "reel world" Freddy adventures. There were no corny one-liners, the Freddy-killings are actually kinda shocking (albeit relatively mundane), and the whole deal with 'real' Freddy messin' with Langenkamp's kid actually disturbed me a little bit. Sadly, the climactic ending was a bit too hokey, bringing down a movie that I thought had some real momentum going up to this point.
The 'New Nightmare' DVD includes a theatrical trailer, English subtitles, and a feature-length commentary by director Wes Craven. I was shocked by how calm and soft-spoken he was here-- his demeanor and behavior just didn't seem to jibe with his reputation as a premier horror-film director. Not really having seen himor heard him talk all that much before I took a listen to this track, I was kinda expecting some stark raving madman who'd just escaped the local psych lock-up...
Anyhoo, in the commentary track Craven goes over the usual stuff that directors usually discuss in movie commentary tracks: the technical aspects and the difficulty he had shooting some scenes, the things that inspired him to make the movie, and his philosophy on filmmaking. He also talks about how close to REAL real-life his movie got with the principals (particularly Heather Langenkamp), both on a personal and professional level.
All in all, I found 'New Nightmare' to be a somewhat compelling new take on the 'Nightmare' franchise, and a pretty good bookend to the whole schmear. If only the ending was a bit stronger...
