Customer Reviews of Welt
is this industrial? I dunno. But it's very very good If you expect to find some Skinny Puppyish material here, don't do it. OK, Ogre is the singer here, but this is not dark hard electronics. In fact, I don't know if this is electronics at all, industrial, rock, pop... Let me explain: when you listen to this album you can notice Ohgr must have very heterogeneous musical tastes, because this 'Welt' reminds me at the same time of so diverse music: David Bowie, Skinny Puppy (especially some songs from 'The Process'), Nine Inch Nails (ok, industrial purists, don't kill me, I'm not saying Ohgr is NIN style, but it has sometimes some reminiscences, some links). This music contains guitars (not metal ones), techno rhythms, electronics (quite simple but well crafted and effective) Ogre's voice sounds as it never sounded before (except from a couple of The Process's songs ('Candle', 'Cult?)) It is melodic, agressive, distorted, depending on the effect to achieve and the song. These seem very alike at first listening, but then you start to get the differences... 'Cracker' should be a hit, really, its chorus ('It's an original') is really catchy and wonderful. There's really no bad song here, all the 11 are really wonderful. So, when you buy this work, bear in mind that this is not Skinny puppy: it's different. But it's not only ok, it's really really good. I've read that this cd should have been released 4 or 5 years ago? well, it sounds ok for 2001; A last thing: I don't know how this cd will work commercially, but I think that it could be a hit not only in alternative charts but if it was properly commercialised it could be (I know it won't, but it could be) a real hit. It does contain all the elements for it: it's not Oasis but it's catchy (and good); it's not Skinny Puppy but it's complex in its simplicity. Buy it, listen to it, relish it... I really hope Ohgr won't be a 1 cd band and continue in the future. 'Welt' is a magnificent work.
former skinny puppy front man makes accessable album
first, let it be known that welt has been done in one form or another since 1996 but nivek ogre and mark walk ran into label troubles so welt has been floating around in limbo for five years now. think about how music was then...bad but not as bad as now so maybe it's a good thing that welt was released in 2001. eleven song long, welt is as different as they come. by that,if you're expecting skinny puppy you're expecting wrong. the opening track water is a beautiful yet chaotic pace setter into a diverse yet accessable album full of loud innovative synth and layered with something a little more familiar-ogre vocals. other notables are kettle for its excellent use of abrasive synth and cracker, which is the most pop one could hope to expect from ogre. take a close listen to the lyrics in cracker as well, and attempt to figure out who's sucking life from the mainstream. it's not ogre or walk. also, industrial superstar percussionist william reiflin adds his two cents into a near perfect experience. welcome back, ogre.
A masterpiece by ohGr
I first bought Sunnypsyop as it was the only of the two ohGr albums available in my location. I still can't believe how good that album is. So, desiring more, I bought Welt. Well, Welt is just as amazing, if not more.
First off, the pieces on this album are creative and extremely varied. None of the songs sound anything like any other songs on this album.
Also, the lyrics are phenomenal. Kevin Ogilvie really has a great command of English and shows off every rhythmic, phonic, and other technique he knows. The combination is lyrics that aren't awkward, aren't disgusting, and don't make you reel in pain as you listen to them which is very important, I feel, in an album. But they are more than just bearable; they are amazing! As you can probably see, I greatly enjoy they lyrics.
Lastly, the tone of the music is suprisingly upbeat. Skinny puppy, as I know them, has dark tunes and noisier music, focusing on effects and dark atmosphere than tunefulness. Welt is nothing like this. Each song is extremely tuneful, with very intelligent and thought provoking sounds. Despite the album art, this CD isn't really frightening or disturbing (at least to me).
I highly recommend this album for pretty much anyone who can enjoy the creativity ohGr puts forth here.
One last note: Lyrics can be found at www.ohGr.com or www.ohGr.net if you wish to get a sense them.
