Customer Reviews of Weather Report Girl 2 (Japanimation) / Subtitled
Warm fronts? Things actually heat up. In the first of this two-part series, In For Nasty Weather, Nakadai Keiko became ATV's new weather girl and gave the network skyhigh ratings by flashing her undies and putting on risque costumes. Well, in Warm Fronts In Collision, Nakadai Keiko's the popular favourite on ATV. However, the director in charge of airing the news programme hates Keiko and warns her, "SHE is coming back from France. Your reign is over."
She turns out to be Shimamori Kaori, a girl who was abroad studying in France whose father is a Diet member. She has been elected to become the new news anchor on ATV. However, Keiko hates competition and at a welcoming reception starts from giving her the bird to slugging her outright. Kaori though is a more mild-mannered, congenial teamplayer. Her goody twoshoes "We're all just employees. The employees make the company" riles Keiko.
Keiko still has enemies from the previous story. Kawaii Michiko, the weathergirl ousted due to Keiko's panty-flashing in the earlier story, still bears a grudge, even though Michiko did attempt to tamper with Keiko's food. To rub insult to injury, she's now Keiko's personal assistant, who has to clean up her apartment, fix the food and do the laundry. And guess how she has to clean Keiko's underwear? And sometimes, it's when Keiko is still wearing them!
Keiko and Kaori are enemies, and their mutual animosity is evenly matched, (hence the title) but then the two are forced to be a team. They are the stars of ATV's Newscast 9, consisting of the news and weather report, and that programme has the highest rating. Alas, the rest of ATV's programmes have such low ratings, people on the street couldn't even name them. To that end, the two work to promote the network via some PR work, including a very funny scene in a restaurant where Keiko, ever the exhibitionist and entertainer, stages an incident at the expense of Kaori and a bottle of 1959 Bordeaux, much to the delight of the crew.
Some trivia here: The message Keiko sends to Michiko's beeper reads "Climb Mt. Niitaka." That code phrase commenced naval operations which culminated in the bombing of Pearl Harbor. And the sequence showing Keiko "working like a new girl should" has little Japanese words floating around her. They read "Kimben," "Rohdoh," and "Hohshi," meaning diligence, toil, and service, respectively.
As in the other episode, this comedy doesn't have much skin or violent scenes compared to most adult anime, but it's pretty profane. Some may also be put off by Keiko's supercompetitive and aggressive behaviour. Also, both Keiko and Kaori's eyes are more narrower compared to the wide-eyed Sailor Moon scouts. The only one who comes closest to that is Michiko. And the first live action movie based on this anime, Weather Woman, has Kaori in it.
Best seen with its companion piece back-to-back, but it can be viewed as a stand-alone piece, as the reader can fill in the blanks from info given by characters. Worth watching for anime viewers, maybe not for those with conventional tastes. And love that techno theme song played at the beginning and end of the video.
