Customer Reviews of Waiting for the Sun
Another brilliant album by a brilliant band These guys just kept getting better and better. The first track, "Hello, I Love You" gets the album going with a Kinks-sounding song. "Love Street" is a sweet-sounding tune with Ray Manzarek's keyboard playing. Next comes the killer: "Not To Touch The Earth," an eerie-sounding song where at the end Morrison exclaims, "I am the Lizard King/I can do anything." Why sure you could, Jim! Anything except stop drinking.
The next two tracks are atypical Doors music, yet they are very beautiful songs: "Summer's Almost Gone" and my favorite, "Wintertime Love." "The Unknown Soldier" is an excellent song about war - perhaps a tribute to the Viet Nam soldiers. "Spanish Caravan" proves yet again that Robbie Krieger is an extremely talented guitar player. A beautiful song. "My Wild Love" has Morrison delving into his Native American soul. Morrison sings while the rest of the bandmembers are chanting away- and that's the song. No music, but very, very captivating. Next is an upbeat tune "We Could Be So Good Together," from which Patricia Butler took the lines "Angles dance and angels die" and entitled her book about Morrison's relationship with Pamela Courson. "Yes, The River Knows" is a slow melodramatic song with Manzarek's beautiful piano playing. I hear it's one of his favorite Doors' songs. Last, is the precursor to heavy metal music called "Five To One" where Morrison is practically screaming and not singing - he almost sounds as if he was drunk when recording this one.
All together, the songs, the music, and the lyrics prove that The Doors were one of the greatest bands of the 60's - if not all time. Although I'll never know why the title track is not included on this album but rather on their later release "Morrison Hotel," this is great listening and I highly recommend it. Get it and enjoy!
Devilishly Incomplete But Satisfying
This album is a great Morrison atmospheric experience, has the blues and rock moments as well as the poetry which ebbs as quickly as it rises. In the end the experience fizzles out unceremoniously with a rock n roll snarl. People who seem to nitpick this album shoot down songs like FIVE TO ONE and the UNKNOWN SOLDIER both of which, I would consider, are typical (meaning damn good) Doors pieces. People who pick this up for HELLO I LOVE YOU could also be disappointed as that particular joint is fairly unique on this album and in the Doors catalogue. Let me tell you people, this Doors effort is about mood more than rock. LOVE STREET is sweetly bland, the lyrics mean nothing, the song is a muse of sorts-sometimes it is very enjoyable. NOT TO TOUCH THE EARTH is a part of the CELEBRATION OF THE LIZARD and is bizarre alone. It also loses alot of its impact because this studio recording of the track leaves the percussion and bass a little light. SUMMER'S ALMOST GONE is an exceptionally good song, note the lyrics, it is a beautiful tragedy. WINTERTIME LOVE could have been written by John Tesh, let's pretend it doesn't exist. You might like it drunk on Christmas Eve. THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER has good energy, and that characteristic late 60's anti-war vigor, the little scene portrayed in the middle is stupid-if you listen real close you can tell that is Densmore making the shooting noise! SPANISH CARAVAN begins a new emotion on the album, Krieger deftly begins with flamenco guitar and then leads with electric when the song gets down to business-a great Doors song. MY WILD LOVE is a personal favorite, it is Morrison as shaman, complete with wailing throng and tambourines-this song will take you somewhere man. WE COULD BE SO GOOD TOGETHER is not a bad song, not good-out of place and forgettable. YES, THE RIVER KNOWS is interesting, on the moody level of LOVE STREET, very soulful as concerns Jim. FIVE TO ONE is not really an album closer in my opinion especially after the former, but by itself it is a very-Doors song, I love it. It ends with the typical Morrison random and suspicious banter. This album is not the blockbuster for these guys but has great moments throughout. Exploration yielding good results.
Not To Touch This Album You'll Be Happier
I was so dissappointed with this album. After "Hello I Love You" it took a nosedive which they didn't recover until "My Wild Love" one good accapella song. Then again they fell apart until "Five To One" which is one of my favorite Doors songs. "Love Street" is about as uninspiring as "Pleasant Valley Sunday", "Not To Touch The Earth", and "Summer's Almost Gone" are very depressing. The rest are there taking up space.
