The Summerslam That Made Summerslam A Household Name! 1989 Summerslam
August 28, 1989
The Meadowlands
East Rutherford, New Jersey
Hart Foundation V. Brain Busters
Awesome Tag Team Opener. One of my favorites. The Busters were Tag Team Champions at the time. Busters win in a forgotten classic. ****3/4
Dusty Rhodes V. Honky Tonk Man
The American Dream wins in a less than classic. *
The Red Rooster V. Mr. Perfect
This match could have been good, but the Rooster blew it. Perfect's push continues. *1/4
The Rockers & Tito Santana V. The Rougeau Brothers & Rick Martel
I love the Tag Team Matches in the early days of the WWF. Good match with the the Rougeaus & Martel winning. ***1/2
Intercontinental Championship:
Rick Rude (Champion) V. The Ultimate Warrior
This match was alot better than the one they had at WrestleMania with the Warrior regaining the Intercontinental Championship in the only title match of the evening. ***3/4
"Hacksaw" Jim Duggan & Demolition V. Andre The Giant & The Twin Towers
Horrible match with Duggan & Demoliton winning. 1/2* I love tag team matches, but I'm sorry, I can't match this.
Hercule V. Greg "The Hammer" Valentine
The only good thing about this match is that Valentine wins. 3/4*
"Superfly" Jim Snuka V. Ted DiBiase
DiBiase wins by countout. 3/4*
Hulk Hogan & Brutus Beefcake V. Randy Savage & Zeus
Very long and very boring match. Hulk & Beefcake win, of course they do. Hogan really needs to learn how to job. ** main event
Overall a pretty good show, there are only 3 or 4 good matches on this card, but the matches were great and the forgotten classic between The Hart Foundation and The Brain Busters made this a one of the best Summerslams ever. ****
HENRY S AKA EXODUST
CLASSICAL SUMMERSLAM BUT I WISH THE MAIN EVENT WOULDVE BEEN HULK HOGAN AGAINST ZEUS. BUT IT WAS HARD HOW VINCE MADE THE STORY FROM THE MOVIES 2 THE JEALOUS OF ZEUS NOT WINNING AT THE BLOCKBUCTER NO HOLDS BARRED. ALL MATCHES WAS GOOD IN MY BOOK SUMMERSLAMS R BETTER THAN WRESTLEMANIAS.
SummerSlam '89 by an old fan
This is definately one of the stronger SummerSlams. Just look at the lineup:
Main Event
WWF Champion Hulk Hogan and Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake
VS.
"Macho Man" Randy Savage and "The Human Wrecking Machine" Zeus (that guy from "No Holds Barred")
Intercontinental Title Match
Intercontinental Champion Ravishing Rick Rude (RIP) VS. The Ultimate Warrior
Six Man Tag Matches
Hacksaw Jim Duggan (King Of The Ring at the time) and Demolition (Ax and Smash) VS. Andre The Giant (RIP) and The Twin Towers (Big Boss Man and Akeem)
Tito Santana and The Rockers (Marty Jannetty and a young Shawn Michaels) VS. Rick Martel and The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers (Jacques and Raymond)
These are just some highlights. This is back when the WWF had much better charecters who had a lot of charisma. It's at least a chance to see some of today's "old guys" when they were young and in their prime. When SummerSlam was still new.
