Nine characters can fight it out in the ring at any one time, making this game a showcase for the power of the Dreamcast. The action turns into quite the melee as over 20 of your favorite WWF superstars (the Rock, the Road Dogg, Kane, D'Lo Brown, the Big Show, for instance) take to the squared circle in a battle of epic proportions.
Like its arcade cousin, the Dreamcast version features controls that are easy to learn and a breeze to execute. One button is used for attacking, another for grappling, and a third for pinning, running, and climbing the top rope. Use the directional pad when tapping the buttons to determine which special move you will perform on your opponent. A double button press during a match causes your partner to toss in a concealed weapon, do a run-in attack, or maybe even perform a double tag-team move on your opponent.
Each time a wrestler takes damage or delivers a special move, his or her special meter increases. Once the meter is filled, an S appears next to the meter. The letters allow signature moves to be executed, or they can be used to escape or hold a pin. The more Ss you have, the more power you have in a match (you can save up to five of these important letters).
The single-player mode gets old quickly, but add two or three of your friends and this game becomes amazing. For some, WWF Royal Rumble will be a button-mashing masterpiece. --Todd Mowatt

Customer Reviews of WWE: Royal Rumble
A fun WWF game, but... ...
I purchased this game when it was actually released right here on Amazon, and I'll tell you what I thought of it after a week of playing. It's a fun game. It looks beautiful. Probably the best looking wrestling game I've seen. The power of Dreamcast really shows here. I wish THQ would have actually thrown in some wrestler intros, since those would probably look nice on DC, but they didn't for some reason. The wrestlers just start out in the ring and do a pose or something, similar to the Ready To Rumble games, but without the trash talking or funny lines.
When they say it's "Arcade-like", they're not kidding! This game is NOT as deep as Smackdown or Wrestlemania 2000. There is no create-a-wrester, season mode, cage matches, special ref, or any of the wonderful features that made those other THQ games great. There are only about 20 wrestlers in this game. If you love lots of modes in wrestling games, then you'll be disappointed here. There are only two modes in Royal Rumble. Yes, 2.
Exibition: You pick a WWF superstar and go through 10 (quick) matches with random superstars, until you win..... nothing?
Royal Rumble: Pick a WWF superstar, and wrestle in the 30 man over the top battle royal. Since there are only about 20 wrestlers in the game, guys you have eliminated will return. The only good thing here, is that 9 guys can be in the ring at once - which is a first for wrestling games, but can be really confusing at times.
Bottom line, if you're looking for a game like Smackdown - with it's create-a-superstar mode, season mode, and all the extras, then you'll be disappointed in Royal Rumble. If you're looking for a fun game you can toss in and have a quick match or two with a buddy, then you'll probably like this game.
Good game but NOT a Smackdown or No Mercy type game
It's a fun game - very arcadish - if you ever played it in the arcade or remember the old WWF Wrestlemania and In Your House games from the original Playstation, you'll have an idea of what you're in for. No storylines, just action - if you want storylines, look to another platform - PS2, PSX, X-Box, Gamecube, N64.
2 game modes - Royal Rumble (30,60,90 or no limit to the # of partcipants) - you must eliminate the number you choose to win - 100 guys can be eliminated but unless you eliminate 30 of them, the game will continue. Up to 9 guys are in the ring at once.
Exhibition - 10 matches w/ a "partner" - NOT a tag team match - but you can call your partner into the ring a select # of times during the match to interfere.
# of wrestlers - 22 (2 hidden) - not much of a selection and no create a wrestler mode so what you get is it. Big names are there (Rock, Austin, Big Show, HHH, 'Taker, Kane, Jericho, etc.)
Entrances are pretty weak - no Titantrons - just a quick image the wrestler with their tag team partner (in exhibition mode). All in all, a fun game, especially with multiplayer but a different THQ game than from the others they have released.
DO NOT BUY! RENT!
This is not a very Good Wrestling Game...NO mercy for the N64 was the best..get that..
This game is very dull...the controls are alright but a bit clunky..I though it was fun for about 1 hour..Very bad Dream Cast game...AND THERE ONLY WRESTLING GAME...But that doesn't really matter since Dream Cast has some of the Best Games ever made..
This game just plain sucked...Don't buy it...
