Customer Reviews of WMF Profi Plus 14-Inch Nonstick Ball Whisk
I am not that hot on this little gadgety item I LOVE gadgets, so when I saw this new style of whisk, I was quick to order it right away. The theory behind it was good. Being open ended, it would eliminate one of the biggest complaints I had of the regular balloon whisks - that food would get caught between the loops and it was hard to wash. So I bought this item and really looked forward to giving it a try. <

>I was disappointed. It didn't perform as I had expected. First off, this is a lot heavier than my "regular" whisks. It's very well made and each stainless steel line is a lot thicker and stiffer than I had expected - which is a good thing for quality - but a bad thing for weight. When whisking up a batch of eggs, my wrist gets tired a lot faster with this whisk than my regular lightweight one...and I'm not convinced it performs any better. My balloon whisk is really good at picking up batches of liquid/eggs and flinging it over to the other side of the mixing bowl. This whisk cannot "pick up" as much since it's just long sticks with balls at the end. It does pick up some, and it does aerate some - but not as much as a quality balloon whisk. This makes sense when you really compare the two designs. Loops will "pick up" more than sticks with balls on the ends. <

>I had not anticipated how thick and stiff each "line" was - this makes it very "boingy". Meaning, if you pulled one of those lines back, it would very definitely "boing" back into place. This led to a very unexpected experience. When mixing, sometimes the lines would catch or something in the mixing bowl (maybe a few lines would entangle into each other) and then it would "boing" back - this led to splatters of whatever I was mixing all over myself and the kitchen. This happened a few times while I was mixing different things - and VERY annoying. My regular balloon whisks NEVER do this. <

>So in conclusion - this is a very good quality product. The theory is very interesting and it does work. It is not perfect though and has it's drawbacks. I would reach for this when mixing heavier items. Heavier items like light doughs really clog up balloon whisks and can bend the delicate loops. But this heavy duty whisk would be quite perfect for that task. The dough won't clog up the lines, and the lines are heavy duty enough for the task. If I'm mixing something light like eggs or egg whites - where I have to beat it quite a bit - I will definitely still reach for my balloon whisk. <

>At 14", this is a "large" whisk. I have small hands, so the 8 & 11" ones fit all my needs just fine and I find this whisk to be a little on the large size for me. I think the 8" and 11" are must haves, and going larger is for larger tasks (meals for 4+ people or for people with larger hands. <

>This is a very nice item to have to complement your other kitchen utensils, but it's not a must have and it's not a replacement for good quality balloon whisks.
For everyday whisking, get the metal version that WMF makes.
I have both and prefer the metal version of this that WMF makes for everyday whisking. Because the "balls" are made of plastic (or whatever they use), they just don't have the heavy weight to truly make aerating or general whisking as easy as it is with the metal version, which by the way, does a SPECTACULAR JOB! I haven't found too many uses for this nonstick version yet, but I still find it better than the traditional balloon styles.
Nifty Tool
This is a nifty tool to create those hard sugar designs that make lovely looking desserts. This is a wonderful tool to have, but it doesn't come in too handy for your average whisking needs. If you want to buy this, you should probably learn the best ways to use it first.
