As the season unfolds, the hits just keep on comin', including the classic "Turkeys Away," about a Thanksgiving stunt that goes hilariously awry ("As God is my witness," Mr. Carlson insists, "I thought turkeys could fly"), the "Goodbye Johnny" two-parter in which the (briefly) departed Johnny's replacement is involved in payola (resulting in Mr. Carlson mistaking cocaine for foot powder), and "Never Leave Me, Lucille," in which Jennifer desperately tries to reunite Herb with his wife. Purists may balk at the replaced songs, but the sharp writing and performances provide WKRP's real music. --Donald Liebenson

Customer Reviews of WKRP in Cincinnati - The Complete First Season
...up and down the dial... o.k...so the music isn't great...and the cuts aren't great...we know, and that sucks... <
>but, we were also gripping and moaning about getting these out in the first place, so they could've said 'fugget-about-it' and scrapped the whole idea to begin with... <
>and nobody's forcing you to buy it, but, you will force yourself because you know how great a show it is, cuts, crappy music and all... <
>the only question i have is...in a future season, when Hoyt Axton guest stars and sings a song for Jennifer, ("Della And The Dealer"), will they have to cut that too?... <

Now that I've actually SEEN the DVDs: still a good show
Firstly I think it's important to note how many of these reviews were written before the DVDs were even available. Yes, we're all upset about most of the music being removed, but the reviews are supposed to be about the DVD release itself, and based on first-hand experience.

>I enjoyed the DVD release, in spite of the omission of most of the original music. I do have the benefit of watching the show with a fresh perspective: My wife did not grow up in this country, so she had never seen WKRP, and is not familiar with a lot of the music that had been cut out. Having watched the DVDs together, we can confirm that the characters and stories still stand on their own. Obviously, I wish Fox had done a better job with this, but I do not feel that they ruined it. My three-star rating applies to this DVD release; I would give a much higher rating to the original program.
Finally on DVD
I have been waiting for WKRP to be released on DVD, and was ecstatic when I found out it was finally happening. I rushed out and bought the 1st season set, and I LOVE IT! The episodes look great, and if some of the music has been changed, so what? The core of the show is still the same (the characters and hilarious storylines). I hope they decide to release season 2 to DVD, and I will rush out to buy it too!
