>I'm not too fond of Penelop Cruz but she is amazing in this movie! So many serious topics rolled into one movie, so dark yet colorful. <

>I collect spanish and south-american movies and this one is one of my favorites.
Penelope Cruz is good in this film.....
Imagine my utter surprise when I saw Volver and discovered that Penelope Cruz can actually act. I have never been a fan of her's due to her incompetence but in her native language, Cruz shined quite clearly and it was almost refreshing to see her act in amost natural way. I read once that many foreign actors or actresses often get stale when acting in a language which is not their native tongue. Penelope Cruz to me, seem to be a perfect example. But in Volver, she seem to be all that she hyped up to me.

>The movie deals with woman, her mother and her family which lies shrouded in mystery, lies and deception. I would say that this movie is a "girl flick" per say since most guys won't really have to see this and if they did, see it again. But the movie proves to be well scripted, very well acted and despite of the subtitles, the flair of the movie come through very well. That is credited to the director who did a fine job.

>Overall, a pretty worthy movie that revealed Penelope Cruz as a fine actress and make people forget her American movies like Sahara!
A thought provoker
The subject matter of this film is quite dark. Without giving the story away, it deals with the lives of a Spaniard family, that starts with a visit to their "Tia" (the sister of their deceased mother), who is old and very close to death. At first glance, you won't be able to discern where the movie is heading, as it starts in a very normal way. However, as the twists and revelations start coming, you'll be taken through a sad, yet ultimately endearing journey of guilt, sins, and forgiveness.

>The acting in this film is top notch. With the entire cast pushing in some impressive performances. I highly recommend you see this film in its original language (Spanish), as I've always found that viewing movies that way allows you to feel the power of the performances that much more. Penelope Cruz is especially divine in this film, giving us a heartfelt and humorous performance; you'll be presently surprised how much understated humor this film has, considering the seriousness of the film.
