Customer Reviews of Veteran
3-1/2 stars -- Veteran's Day First things first: I'm wondering if a lot of these reviewers have ever even heard of Marques Houston before MH (the album), because he's been in the game for about fifteen years (remember Immature?). Speaking of Immature, I think I'm the only guy that actually admitted listening to them when I was in middle school (Marques is the same age I am) because they always had good music and lyrics. And Marques hopes to continue that with his third solo release, Veteran. <

>It seems like each of Marques' albums has had a different vibe, not to mention a different reception. MH was pushed back numerous times and STILL tanked when it was finally released, and Naked, although good, was pretty much just for shock value. But with Veteran, Marques takes on a more serious tone that still successfully incorporates elements of his usual fare. What I don't understand, though, is why his first singles somehow always feels like something left over from an IMx album ("That Girl", "All Because of You", "Favorite Girl"). <

>But those songs aren't bad, and this album still kicks. Things start out really interesting with the intro, which features an audio recording of a toddler Marques talking about his goals and ambitions. The album itself then impresses through tracks like "Exclusively" and "Circle"; and "Wonderful" was my favorite song until I heard "So Right For Me". And when I found out that "Hold N' Back" features Mya and Shawnna, I thought it would suck, but the song is actually quite good. <

>One concern I have, though, is Marques' falsetto. It isn't bad, but it just sounds odd because he has a habit of doing it at the wrong time (Bilal, anyone?), especially in the already questionable "Like This". The song features Yung Joc, and you can tell because it sounds like a carbon copy of Joc's own "It's Goin' Down" (and I never liked THAT song either). This is why I can't rate the album higher than three-and-a-half stars; that, and because of a handful of lyrically challenged songs like "How You Just Gonna" and "Always & Forever" ("It's your thighs/Your lips/Your calves/Your lips/It's your hair/Did I mention your lips?"). Marques Houston still has skills, but Veteran is pretty much one of those albums that you should borrow first if you're not a big fan of his. <

Could have been a lot better...
Perhaps this album is just not my bag when it comes to Marques this time around. I fell in love with his music during his last album "Naked" simply because the fact that the entire was solid from start to finish instead of the obvious that he was using his body/nudity to sell it. Fast forward to 2007 and "Vateran" is released. I really don't like the album because it's a bit too mellow for my taste. Usually I love the production that The Underdogs do for MH but something isn't right. On the other hand, I really like the second single "Circle" because I, along with many others, can relate to it. If Marques really wants to be a veteran I suggest he go back to the drawing board and try again instead of offering this kind of material...
