Customer Reviews of Verdi: Otello
the best After hearing Del Monaco sing "Esultate", I am absolutely incapable of enjoying anybody else in that piece. The Act III Monologue is not as convincing, but, because most of the role of Otello requires an enormous, brilliant voice to declaim, sometimes in anger, sometimes out of pride, Del Monaco succeeds big-time in this role.
Tebaldi's Desdemona is poetic and vocally opulent.
Protti as Iago is definitely good, but not nearly on the same level as most other aspects of this recording. His voice is nice but not phenomenal, and his portrayal isn't all that sinister.
The sound, both of the Vienna Philharmonic and of the recording, is both clear and atmospheric. In other words, magical!
Karajan's conducting is very poetic, very powerful, very "tragic" at appropriate moments, and exciting in it's own way. Some people may prefer a faster reading, with more drive and sparkle, but the "Karajan approach" works here, in my opinion, most of the time (it's only in Act I that I sometimes would rather be hearing Levine or Solti).
To sum up, despite some slight reservations about Protti, about
Del Monaco's rendition of the Monologue, and about some of Karajan's conducting in Act I, I still find this to be my favorite Otello recording, and, in fact, one of my favorite opera recordings altogether.
Otello!
I think this is the best Otello. First of all, Mario del Monaco with his dark and mature voice performs an incredible Otello full of power and vitality. From the Esultate to Nium mi tema he transmits his anger, his pain and his tremendous warrior character. It is curious how a heavy voice is also flexible chanllenging O Monstruosa Colpa (duet with Jago). Renata Tebaldi with his sweet lyric voice, better than others lirico-leggera sopranos, suits perfectly with Desdemona role. Perhaps because they recorded many operas together, their voices are marvelous at duets like Gia la notte densa. Aldo Protti is quite rude but he has a particular voice that makes a credible Jago. Also Karajan orchestation is superb. He is a master conducting the lyric passages as Salce or Flower Chorus. In fact is one of the references to have a good Otello. If you want to hear a younger Del Monaco, there is another version conducted by Alberto Erede.
Something diferent, perhaps is Toscanini version with Vinay (Wagnerian but latin, more smart than Del Monaco), Nelly and Valdengo. It will enjoy yourself. Toscanini is the finest conductor with haunting and also tense effects.
A truly great record
This is one of the handful of supremely great recordings of Verdi. But its competition is strong too. If you're in the market for a first "Otello" the Serafin with Vickers must have first place. But don't hesitate to buy this one also, as a superb second recording.
