Customer Reviews of Venus Ds3r 3.5in Ext Raid Encl, Gen.2
Firewire 800 not ready for prime time on pc 64 bit os The enclosure itself is great, I didn't buy it for raid, I bought it for two single drives. I run xp 64 bit professional on all my machines, using the embedded firewire 400(a) connector this bay works fine. Firewire 800 has been a problem. The unibrain controller card is the only one with 64 bit drivers now and it doesn't work right with this box, unibrain said the drivers need tweaking and they're working on it. SIIG should have 64 bit drivers available soon but that doesn't help me right now. This unit works great on the firewire 400 ports on my system using native drivers but I bought it for the faster 800 and apparently microsoft isn't supporting that yet so if you've got a mac you should have no issues with this but on a pc you might have problems. I haven't tried the RAID but from what I've read it takes HOURS to format the drives and setup the raid and you need two identical drives preferably bought at the same time so they're in theory the same production run. I like that you can buy extra trays it's a small compact unit and it does what it claims it's just that right now the firewire 800 support on the windows OS is limited on 32 bit and lacking on 64 bit. Be sure to pair this with a TI chipset controller card that is what AMS recommends.
