Want to live forever? Get a taste for what it's like with Vampire: The Masquerade Redemption, the first computer role-playing game based on the tremendously popular dice-and-paper and live-action RPG from White Wolf Game Studio. Die-hard fans will grumble a bit at some of the translation concessions from book to hard drive. The vampiric disciplines in particular are less flexible and occasionally more hassle than they're worth--sure, you can turn into a wolf, but you can't return to your natural form until the time limit expires. Still, these limitations don't interfere with the gameplay, which is fast moving, challenging, and genuinely creepy. Graphics and sounds are well designed, and along with the plot they evoke the mood of gothic horror that has made Vampire so popular.

The single-player mode locks you into the story line of Christof, a medieval crusader who blunders into immortality at the fangs of an ancient Brujah vampire. Christof's damnation and search for redemption lead him from the Prague of the Dark Ages to modern New York City. Multiplayer options include local area network and Internet play as well as the ability to create and run your own stories for other players. The manual is beautiful and helpful, a rare combination. Clearly, the designers took their cue from White Wolf, as evidenced by the clarity of text and carefully chosen illustrations. Though Redemption is well worth playing, gamers should be warned that the save-game feature is irritating and often beyond the player's control and that the installation requires at least 720 MB (and up to 1.3 GB!). Despite these flaws, the game is still wicked fun and merits plenty of praise. --Rob Lightner

Customer Reviews of Vampire - The Masquerade (Jewel Case)

an under-rated game
i thought this game was a lot of fun to play. it wasn't an accurate representation of the Storyteller rules system, but that wasn't what i was after. it is an enjoyable game with an interesting storyline. if you are looking for a game where you'll have to concentrate hard or solve obnoxious puzzles, look elsewhere. if you want about forty hours of fun gaming, then buy this game.

An excellent foray into the world of darkness...
This game was excellent! Admittedly, you were cast as one character, instead of being able to make your own, but this is made up by having an excellent, well fit together storyline. You really feel empathy for Cristof. The graphics are a bit dated by now (4 years later) but it is still an excellent game. The rule system is done well, and a wide array of disciplines are available. Also, I appreciated that the creators didn't shy away from the bloodshed (allowing you to feed on people, not just animals). It adds to the gritty feeling of the dark world.
All and all, worth your money, especially at the price you'll find it now.

Awful
As an avid fan of the Masquerade paper and pencil game, I looked forward to this game for a long while. Then when it came out, the almost universal proclamations of how terrible it was directed me elsewhere, and I forgot about it...however, I recently saw it for sale here for cheap so I figured I'd give it a shot.

I played it all the way through. Every painful minute. Every thou and mayest, every ridiculously scripted situation, every absurdly linear sequence. I was there. I can safely say I am only dumber for the experience.

What good is it, getting all the disciplines if only two or three of them are really useful? What good is it rising in power if onec you figure out how to lure away foes from their group and keep your idiot party members from running amuck, every fight is a piece of cake? What good is it to include machine guns that are roughly as effective as bows and arrows (including a chain gun!), about as much fun to use as throwing rocks, and will never, ever approach the damage you can do with your bare hands?

Look, I have played through Blood Omen II, which is by far the least fun of the Legacy of Kain series, with the possible exception of Soul Reaver 1 for Dreamcast which was seriously incomplete. But that game at least had some engaging aspects in its repetition, as well as a plot that honestly dealt with being evil (rather than in Masquerade the video game, where apparently "good vampires" don't kill pedestrians when they feed on them, and "bad vampires" do.).

I cannot really recommend this game to anyone. The multiplayer aspect is incomprehensible, especially with the lack of documentation present here. The single player is overwpoweringly cliched, and one wonders why Nihilistic even bothered licensing White Wolf if they were going to complete ignore the historical accuracy, mystery, essence, and mechanics of Vampire. ... Sure, it ain't the Masquerade, but it's much more fun than this garbage.
