Customer Reviews of Vacancy
wow! excellent---didn't think it could get any better! I have seen J.A. on several occasions...god, he can dance! He can sing! He can rock! It's real simple shee, you dont blink, and you go to J.A. shows...I helped him pick out a shirt once...It was cold outside-orange pumkin bags full of leaves--its cold outside....
Searing, emotional broken folk
Joseph Arthur is really creating modern American folk music, which is ironic, since he lives in London now. His deconstructed/reconstructed folk songs, on both his debut and "Vacancy", might sound atonal and raw at first, but the threads of beautiful melodies are still there, stretched almost to breaking. It's like looking at a wildflower growing out between the cracks of a sidewalk.
This whole EP is terrific, but I can't get enough of two tracks: "Prison", a song which disintegrates into a seamy blast of chaos, but which is held together by a barely-audible gorgeous guitar figure, and "Making Mistakes", which just rips my heart out.
An EP with an edge!
Joseph Arthur should have become a star from his debut album "Big City Secrets." If this new EP, "Vacancy," is any indication as to what his 2nd album will be like when released this fall, then surely J.A. will make a big name for himself. The difference between "Vacancy" and "Big City Secrets" is found in the production. "Vacancy" feels more raw and live. The down to basics acoustic/electric guitars carry the songs along beautiful chord progressions while J.A. shares his intriquing lyrics through vocals that are earthy and have a tenderness that wraps around the listener. I look forward to hearing more from Joseph Arthur in the future.
