As America entered World War II, the men of the U.S. Navy stationed in the Pacific found themselves suddenly forced to rise to the level of greatness. This video examines the life stories of several heroes of the Pacific war, beginning with an ordnance sergeant at Pearl Harbor who took great risks while setting up a machine gun to fire back at the Japanese planes attacking on the morning of December 7, 1941. As with many historical videos, the archival footage shown is not always of the particular action being described, but the video does a good job of illustrating the hazards faced by the combat heroes. The poignant story of a U.S. Navy attack submarine whose captain ordered it to dive, stranding him to drown on the exposed conning tower, is well told. Also featured is the story of Marine sergeant John Basilone, who returned from Guadalcanal a hero, was feted across America, and requested a return to the combat zone, only to perish on Iwo Jima. The ending of the video, a letter by a sailor to his mother being read aloud, provides a touching, if uneven, ending, but the general theme, of men rising to greatness in extremely adverse conditions, comes across very well. --Robert J. McNamara
