Customer Reviews of Uptown Puzzle Club
Crosswords that are a joy to solve I've been a fan of crosswords for most of my adult life. As a New Yorker, I regularly enjoy the NY TImes crosswords and the ones in New York Magazine. I only discovered Uptown Puzzle Club puzzles very recently. A friend of mine is a subscriber, and she generously gave me an issue to do. I absolutely loved them.
The most distinguishing feature of the Uptown crosswords is the gloriously abundant wordplay that peppers the clues. Every other word I found in the diagram made me smile. For example, "Physicist who's had quite an effect" was the clue for _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (guess, or see below!), "Spot announcements?" was for _ _ _ _, and "Beetle juice?" (which I at first thought was the more traditional LAC) turned out to be _ _ _. Ha. There were irreverent clues that I don't normally see elsewhere, too, like "- has left the building" for _ _ _ _ _!
Each month you get five puzzles, and each puzzle is the size of a Sunday NY Times crossword, but a bit easier. I'd say the difficulty level of the puzzles is mediumish to hard, with part of the difficulty coming from clever word connections, and part coming from difficult vocabulary and fact-based clues. I was glad to see that the difficulty wasn't entirely from esoteric words that only a scholar-specialist would know. Each crossword took me between 2 and 3 hours to finish (4 commute trips), which felt like just the right length.
The price of a subscription is steeper than other puzzle magazines (even based on amazon.com's rate) but if like me, you sometimes buy a paper just for the crossword, it's worth it to get puzzles of this caliber. Plus, they're a lot easier to carry around than a full magazine. Full of humor and wit, and supremely entertaining, I highly recommend Uptown crosswords for any crossword fan with a sophisticated sense of humor and love of wordplay. It would make a great gift, too.
