Customer Reviews of Up From the Ashes
Very Cool! I bought the cassette tape when this first came out, but I hadn't heard it in a while and I came across it on CD here at Amazon. I had forgotten just how good this album is. And even though this was Don's solo effort after Dokken's breakup, this very much has the same soundas almost any other Dokken album. Most every song rocks. Crash n Burn, The Hunger, and Down In Flames are awesome rockers while Stay, Mirror Mirror, and Living A Lie rock, but are very catchy tunes.
The only curious thing I noticed was John Norum (formerly of the group Europe) played on this one and also played on the new Dokken CD (Long Way Home). The curious thing is how much different he sounds on the 2 albums. On this one, he rips it up pretty good (nowhere near as good as George Lynch though), but on the new one, he doesn't sound that great. Good, but not real good.
Oh well, this album is pretty awesome and I highly recommend it.
What? This isn't Dokken?
Don Dokken's solo release 'Up From the Ashes' is a truly great album. While some of the material seems a bit lacking in the inspirational department, for the most part the 'UFTA' deserves a good listen. Songs like "Mirror Mirror" (my personal favorite; you can also find it on 'the very best of Dokken' cd released in '99), "1000 Miles Away", "Crash 'N Burn" and the very catchy "Living a Lie" are all wonderful. Let's not forget the beautiful ballad "When Love Finds a Fool" which almost any fan of Dokken will love. There are definitely enough good songs on 'Up From the Ashes' to go around to make this album worth buying especially for seven bucks (?!).
This was a worthy effort led by Don (Dokken's frontman) and this cd was released just two years after the band Dokken had split up when 'Back for the Attack' hit shelves. I always say that Don has an ear for talent and you can really hear it on this solo effort. John Norum (former guitarist of Europe) along with a whole band oozing with talent really let their talent shine on 'Up From the Ashes'. If you like the band Dokken, you will most likely enjoy this cd. It is much better than anything the Lynch Mob ever put out.
Don Dokken-Up From the Ashes
This album is one of the best including Don Dokken's work with Dokken. It is right up there with Under Lock and Key. In the early 90's bands like Dokken, Ratt, and Motley Crue all had members that did other projects. Stephen Pearcy did the Arcade project which produced a decent first album and an average second. Vince Neil did a couple of ok albums but nothing to write home about. Lynch Mob, to me, never did anything worthwhile. However, Don Dokken's Up From the Ashes was an anomaly. It captured the power and energy of Dokken and had a new reflourished sound. I had hoped that Don would do a 2nd solo effort right after the way Lynch Mob did but he waited for Dokken to reform. Being the Dokken purist, I was happy at the time but in retrospect I wish there would have been a sequel. This is a must have for any hard rock fan. It's also one that your normal person doesn't have so you can pull it out and surprise the heck out of someone who is unsuspecting. Brilliant!
