Unreal II's best feature is its lush graphics engine. It's state of the art. All the locations, which range from bizarre alien worlds to those based on the film Alien, exude dynamic realism. Human and alien characters are well-animated and rendered, but have a cartoonish exaggeration that clashes with the realism of the architecture. The designers were undoubtedly shooting for a comic-book look, which explains why the women look like blow-up dolls with bare midriffs and the men have hulking muscles. The monsters, too, ripple with strength and menace. This style will please some, but is less effective than the more realistic styles employed by similar titles--although at least the art direction is consistent throughout the game.
Unreal cast you as a prisoner who--through both good and bad luck--was freed from confinement, but marooned on an alien world. He goes on to become a sort of messiah figure to the four-armed natives, while other, scarier, natives want to kill him. It ends with a cliffhanger that this game does nothing to resolve. Now, you play as a new character who works for the Terran Colonial Authority. You're a space marshal on the ship Atlantis. You and your buxom partner, who looks more like an exotic dancer than a police woman, have to solve problems in a game only tenuously connected with the original Unreal.
Core gameplay and mission design are good, but uninspired. Legend has taken a conservative, almost minimalist approach. They've made a solid shooter that takes full advantage of Epic's state-of-the-art graphics engine, but did nothing to set the shooter apart from the crowd. One hopes that Unreal II: The Awakening awakens Epic to the fact that Unreal is a genuinely interesting franchise that deserves more. --Andrew S. Bub

Customer Reviews of Unreal 2: The Awakening
Unreal II: The Awakening I loved the orginal Unreal and it's mission pack Return to Napali. They are one of the most beautifull games i ever played. Unreal 2 is a good game but not good enough for an Unreal sequel. The orginal Unreal deserves more than this. The gameplay is quite linear, a little short with no multiplayer. Ofcouse it has a good story while the previous game did not but the gameplay here is not that great. The weapons are large and look strange with not so great effects. It's the future, futuristic weapons should be smaller with better effects. Powered by the latest version of the unreal engine the graphics are great with beautifull skies but there are no mirrors or cool reflective surfaces. Fire effects and the flame thrower are really well done. Unreal had beautifull and large levels, Here the levels are very small not that well desinged. You will be watching the loading screen frequently. Unreal 2 is just an average shooter.
Unreally really bad
I have to be honest... I never finished this game. It was horrible. In fact, I'll be bold enough to say it was one of the worst games I've ever seen and played. In a day and age where we have truly innovative shooters such as Halo and Half Life, why, tell me why would someone release this drivel? First of all, allow me to quash some of the statements that various folks made above: This game is NOT polished. The cookie cutter environments are bland in design and are chock full of those invisible barriers that plague so many FPS games. And the animation is awful; next time you play any game try blinking your eyes really fast while looking at the screen. That's what enemies look like when they move/attack/die in Unreal 2. I can't stop laughing at the guy above who said "Stop with the complex plots. People want simplicity!" Did you have a hard time following the story, buddy? Don't speak for me or anyone else. I don't want simplicity. I like to play games that don't talk down to me. In all seriousness, this is one of the most linear, watered down bargain basement action titles that I've ever subjected myself to. What happened to you Atari? I have a suggestion for your new slogan: "Atari. Games For Stupid People."
Horrible
Let's make something clear.... I think everyone needs to know this, especially the people who make games like this: Games are not movies, and games are meant to be played moreso than they are watched. In this game, the emphasis is taken away from gameplay and put towards graphics, cinematics (which you HAVE to watch and you can't leave, and they're very long), and plot. I just bought this today..... I watched about an hour's worth of cinematics, I had to "search" for something (what is this, "Myst"?), and I never even got to play the game because it crashed, despite the fact that I have a brand new Dell. All I can say is, I was already fuming by the time. When it crashed I just took the CD out, bent it in half until it broke and then threw it in the trash along with the other crap that came with it. That's the problem with these new games, it's all about graphics and not the game itself.
Moral of the story: GAMES ARE NOT MOVIES! AND STOP WITH THE COMPLEX PLOTS! PEOPLE LIKE SIMPLICITY!
