Better action, a bit of sex, and gorier R-rated violence make Underworld: Evolution a reasonably satisfying sequel to 2003's surprise hit Underworld. Looking stunning as ever in her black leather battle gear, Kate Beckinsale is every goth guy's fantasy as Selene, the vampire "death dealer" who's now fighting to stop the release of the original "Lycan" werewolf, William (Brian Steele) from the prison that's held him for centuries. As we learn from the film's action-packed prologue, William and his brother Marcus (Tony Curran) began the bloodline of vampires and werewolves, and after witnessing centuries of warfare between them, their immortal father Corvinus (Derek Jacobi) now seeks Selene and the human vampire/lycan hybrid Michael (Scott Speedman) to put an end to the war perpetuated by Victor (Bill Nighy), the vampire warrior whose betrayal of Selene turns Underworld: Evolution into an epic tale of familial revenge. This ambitious attempt at Shakespearean horror is compromised by a script (by Danny McBride and returning director Len Wiseman, Beckinsale's real-life husband) that's more confusing than it needs to be, with too many characters and not enough storytelling detail to flesh them all out. Aspiring to greatness and falling well short of that goal, Underworld: Evolution succeeds instead as a full-throttle action/horror thriller, with enough swordplay, gunplay, and CGI monsters to justify the continuation of the Underworld franchise. If you're an established fan, this is a must-see movie; if not, well... at least it's better than Van Helsing! --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews of Underworld - Evolution (Widescreen Special Edition)

Evolution is a good film
It is interesting to watch and see the path the film's creative team takes in a sequel. In some cases, in a series like Alien, James Cameron decided to move in a more action-oriented direction with the sequel to Alien. The 3rd film in that series failed because they stripped out the strong characters developed (Hicks and Newt) and went with mostly undeveloped characters whom you didnt really care for. <
> <
>With Underworld: Evolution, Len Wiseman also focused more on action and less on the characters introduced in the first film, but rather than turning Evolution into purely a mindless "chase" or action film, he strengthened the 2 leads by providing depth to them and expaning their relationship. <
> <
>I felt the second film had less of a focused plot, and this undercut the driving nature that was found in the first film. The initial film also enjoyed a general cohesiveness that the second one lacked due to its looser and more difficult to follow plot. <
> <
>The second also had some plot holes, such as the existence of Alexander Corvinos that noone in the first film knew of, despite he being the father of all vampires and lycans. <
> <
>But overall, it was a very strong sequel and definitely worth your time. Kate Beck is the dream...

Trash...rotten....stupid and catering to those with low IQ's.
Looking at these reviews makes me sad in a way. The state of America's critical and moviegoing enjoyment has hit an all time low. Everything about this movie is BAD. Giving a movie a good review and reccomending it because you get turned on from Kate does NOT mean it was good folks! I can just see the majority of the 5 star reviewers....fat gamer nerds in their dirty sweats lusting over cartoon porn. Yeah, ok.

Better then the First, but not without its problems.
"Underworld:Evolution" is a no-holds barred bloodfest...and those are always fun. As others have said it focuses on the vampire elder Marcus and his mission to set his twin brother William free from his underground prison where he was locked against Marcus' will hundreds of years earlier. Standing in his way are Selene (Kate Beckinsale) and Michael (Scott Speedman)who may hold the secret to giving him what he wants. Ok, with that being out of the way I will explain briefly the pros and cons without giving away plot points so I won't spoil it for anyone. <
> <
>Pros(+) Continuity between films is great b/c it takes place minutes after the 1st film. <
>The action and special effects are all done very well, with this movie being even gorier then the first. <
>Marcus is a really cool looking villian and is a great match for Selene. <
> <
>Cons(-) Lycans literally take a back seat in this film. I say this for the people who pull for the Lycans in this "Blood Feud". They are numerous but mindless and are killed very easily. Unlike the first film where Lucian was the alpha male, there are no alpha males in this movie, and for being the 1st lycan, William is a HUGE dissapointment, he attracts alot of bullets, but other then that he stands still with his mouth open. Trust me people, I looked forward to William's arrival the whole movie and was dissapointed. <
>The "Sex" scene was pitiful. The director is Kate Beckinsale's husband, so what you get is some "Belly-Button" sex that is laughable and really does takes you out of the film. For those of you that like a little sex in your movies, it comes in a scene with the vampire historian, Tanis and some vamp whores..now that's good stuff. <

>In the end I really do enjoy this film, I just wanted to point out a few things that bothered me, and may bother you. A good DVD to own though. I recommend it.
