Customer Reviews of Undercover Brother (Full Screen Collector's Edition)
VERY funny!!! Like a black version of Austin Powers I am definitely not the only surprised person after watching this movie. I was ready for another refried SNL-based type of movie, but followed my friends' advice, and it was well worth it. Though a little slow at the beginning, Eddie Griffin and SNL veteran Chris Kattan don't take too long to make you laugh. Austin Powers as a character comes to mind as a possible inspiration for the movie, but the "Undercover Brother" character (Eddie Griffin), a new hero for the African American folks totally takes on the role and takes it to its own dimension, wby playing with all black/white stereotypes with great mastery.
The movie parodies some lines from other movies, while still retaining a life of its own, and having plenty of unpredictable funny scenes. Check it out: not your average comedy, for sure. Perhaps won't stand the test of the ages, since some of the humor on it (references to General Warren Boutwell, an African American Sec. of State with President Bush, for instance) will be pretty dated in a few years, but still well worth seeing to have a good laugh!
It Gets Funnier Every Time I Watch It
I first saw UNDERCOVER BROTHER at a second-run theater, and then watched it on cable, but I am now a proud owner of the DVD. Each time I watch the movie, I find something new, and I laugh even more at my previous discoveries. Everything from Undercover Brother spinning his Cadillac without spilling his orange Big Gulp, to his funny one-liners makes this movie a riot. Neil Patrick Harris as the intern to the brotherhood (as a result of Affirmative Action) is a hoot. His comments make the film. (Watch when he gets slapped toward the end of the film for a great example). Billy Dee Williams is a catch too as the Colin Powell-ish former general who "helps you get your chicken on". Listen to the jingle for the General's Fried Chicken ("it's butt kickin' yeah yeah".) I would love to see a sequel to the movie, and since it did okay, but not great in its theatrical run, that may not happen; then again, AUSTIN POWERS: INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY did not make a fortune at the box office, and look how its sequel did. Hope springs eternal.
Good comedies like this don't happen very often...
...Most of the time, the type of comedies we get are teen comedies that pretty much only focus on sexual topics. Not my cup of tea. It's just not funny.
But here, we have a brilliantly funny comedy about a black man mentally stuck in the 70s who's out their protecting racial equality. We also have "The Brotherhood," a secret organization doing the same thing, consisting of mostly blacks. But they stress the message that you just have to be "down" to be in the brotherhood, and you don't have to be black. At first, it seems like only blacks are welcome. But then they realize that working as an equal team is how the job should really be done, regardless of one's race. So this movie has a good message, despite all the racial jokes.
But enough of that. This movie is hilarious! The jokes they make about both black culture and white culture kept me laughing all the way through. You can't take it too seriously. If you do, getting offended will come with the territory for you, and that's not what this movie is about. What goes through my head when the jokes are cracked is, "That's exactly how it is!" And I'm a white guy.
Sure, a lot of the jokes are ones that have been used before. But the WAY they're used in this movie and the creativity behind it all is what made me laugh.
So if you don't get offended easily by culture jokes, and you're in the mood to laugh a lot, this movie is for you.
The DVD has good picture and sound for the movie. It even has 5.1 DTS. This DVD also has a good amount of special features that'll keep you occupied as well, including deleted scenes, outtakes, an alternate ending, a behind the scenes look at the movie, a few original cartoons of Undercover Brother that the movie was based on, etc. - most of which kept me entertained.
Great movie, great DVD!
