Customer Reviews of Ultraman: Series One, Vol. 1
Outstanding ! Finally High quality dvd of my Favorite show as a kid When I got these DVD I Was in heaven, this was my favorite show as a small child and it really brought back some great memories for me being able to see them again in such a format. Well done.
Who brought those monsters here in the first place?
Answer: Ultraman! Earth had no problems until this guy arrived. Our Robotic hero is introduced on the first episode of this DVD set. While pursuing a monster through space, he and the monster end up over earth's atmosphere. The bad monster (it is never established why he is dangerous and therefore worthy of death) takes a dip in a lake amid some weekender's having a cookout/camping party. Ultraman's ball has a head on crash with an innocent representative of the Scientific team that protects the earth from Alien invasion (Japan's version of U.N.I.T. from Dr. Who?) Anyway, Ultraman comes to the almost dead hero in a dream and merges with him, promising to defend the earth since he is stuck here without a ship to return to his galaxy far, far away. Meanwhile, our monster seems to be sitting quietly at the bottom of the lake. Apparently he is a trespasser, so they send a Sub and a Rocket Jet after him. He is assaulted in the rear by a submarine firing torpedoes and when he rises to the surface he is hit by missiles fired from an overhead jet. This is where the laughing begins. Our monster is mercilessly pounded by Sub and Jet in what seems like a situation where he was just trying to take a nap. Then, he is confronted by Ultraman and forced to fight a type of steel cage match, wrestling on the ground until Ultraman begins to lose power (identified by a blinking red light and according to the leader of our heroes, always a universal sign of something wrong)After Ultraman tires of fooling around knocking over cabins and other cheap housing, he finally uses that deadly ray and finishes the creature off. Further adventures follow the same pattern. The best aspect of this show is the monsters. They are fond of roasting things, blowing up chemical plants or any latest technological development. They are drawn to radioactive facilities and power stations full of electricity. Some are invisible. The weekly U.N.I.T. type of team features several men, one young girl and for child identification, a kid who constantly hangs around the unit with no parental control. The staff is so dedicated, they never go home but sleep in their suits at HQ. Everyone on the team is young save for the leader, who is best identified by a smoking pipe. It is basically the same from here. Humor is unintentional or intentional at points. Is it worth it? Well, if you can get through the silly Ultraman song that begins each episode you can stand anything!
Well worth the 35 year wait...
As a kid in the early 70's I would hop on my Western Flyer Buzz-Bike (banana seat w/4 ft. sissy bar) after school and haul it to get home in time to watch Ultraman. I new the characters, the story lines, the monsters...all of it. My friends and I were Ultraman NUTS. However, like so many things from my childhood, Ultraman faded from my memory. For thirty years Ultraman never crossed the radar screen of my memory. That all changed about 5 years ago when I stumbled across a seller on Ebay with the user name ULTRAMAN. SNAP! It all came back to me in a flash! I immediately began searching for the show on the internet. To my dismay, NO DvD's were available. I found all 39 episodes on VHS, but the quality was very poor. When I discovered the DvD's were now available I ordered them immediately and I am VERY satisfied. The picture quality is BETTER than the originals that aired from film on TV. The audio is excellent with the only MINOR issue of Japanese being dubbed in for short periods in a few spots. That is probably due to the ORIGINAL ENGLISH audio track portion being unusable on the old film stock and the Japanese was the only thing available to slip in. NOT A PROBLEM for me. I love it...my kids love it...WELL WORTH THE LOOOONG WAIT!
