Spring 1942: A crew of young submarine sailors are on a much-needed 48-hour liberty when they're suddenly called together and engaged in an expedition. At the helm are Lieutenant Commander Mike Dahlgren (Bill Paxton), Lieutenant Andrew Tyler (Matthew McConaughey), and Chief Klough (Harvey Keitel). Other pivotal crew members include Tyler's Annapolis pal Lieutenant Pete Emmett (Jon Bon Jovi, proving his acting mettle) and Lieutenant Hirsch (Jake Weber), who, along with Marine Major Coonan (David Keith), organizes the mission. As much of the movie takes place in a submarine during WWII, there are inevitable comparisons with the technical masterpiece Das Boot, but Mostow's masterfully shot tale can hold its own.
McConaughey's Tyler is believably earnest as he comes to grips with the reality, tragedy, and consequence of being in command. While this explosion-filled film consistently maintains its tense pace (as did the underrated Breakdown), it also presents with surprising restraint a genuine human story--and the remarkable journey of an unexpected hero. --N.F. Customer Reviews of U-571 (Spanish) (Spec Sub)
Let's rewrite history... News is that a film is in development in the UK about that period of 3 days in August 1945 when the RAF dropped two A-bombs on Japan, thus ending the war. <
> <
>As it is fiction and "Only a Movie" it is thought that Americans won't find too much to dissent about, especially as proper recognition will be made right at the very end of the movie, in small print, just before the credits. <

Why isn't this
This should be rated better than 3 stars. While it is not a perfect movie, it is a good one. Staying faithful to the book, this is an excellent WWII movie aboard subs(u-boats). Nice performances from Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton, Harvey Keitel and a low key Jon Bon Jovi. Give it a look and you will probably drop the 10 bucks to own it.
IT'S A SUBMARINE MOVIE WITH A PLOT -- WHAT COULD BE BETTER THAN THAT?
PROFOUND BIAS:

<
>I must say upfront that this is a real World War 2, fictionalized, Submarine yarn, and I find this type of film to be the ultimate type of compelling naval war drama on film.

>HAVING SAID THAT:
<

<
>This Submarine epic, with the help of the usual submarine movie props and plots does manage to take a gander at some new ground and with some stunning realism. Yes, we've got the cat-and-mouse games between subs and surface vessels, and we have the darkness of the almost truly blind unknown as we wait along with the intrepid submariners for the next depth charge. But it is more than that, much more.

>A NEW PLOT -- A CUNNING FORM OF DESPERATE DECEPTION:
<
>
<
>In older submarine films, it would be unthinkable to depict American submariners, heros in the making, on a mission of unscrupulous and unprecedented piracy! We'll, to put it bluntly, that is what U-571 is all about. The Americans have ascertained that they are indeed primed to lose the war if they don't halt the return of "THE HAPPY TIMES" for the U-boats. America is at war, so the Germans may now attack convoys without the constraints of a neutrality, which had protected American shipping since the outbreak of the war in September of 1939. American cities now provided the background lighting for the U-boats' night attacks, to be more effective than ever. At the same time, the new war in the Pacific, begun by the attack on Pearl Harbor, created the shortage of escort vessels in 1941-1942 which could have provided some of the desperately-needed convoy protection. A sort of double-whammy now confronted the allies in their mission to get war supplies to England.

>SOMETHING HAD TO GIVE! THAT'S WHAT "U-571" IS ALL ABOUT:
<
>
<
>Without sufficient naval forces in the Atlantic to deal with the sudden increase in successful U-Boat operations which commenced right after December 7, 1941, the allies needed an unconventional means by which to neutralize the U-boats. This film's theme is focused on reducing and ultimately neutralizing the U-Boat threat while there was still time. The method chosen was a form of piracy whereby an American submarine was detailed to look like a German U-Boat, including German insignias and the "SWASTIKA"! JUST IMAGINE THAT! The plan called for hijacking a German U-Boat by masquerading as a U-Boat, complete with German speaking American naval personel in German Kriegmarine uniforms. The Enigma Machine, a special coding device that allows high-level Axis forces to send messages that can't be read without a similar encryption mechanism, was the object the Americans sought within the real U-Boat. With the "Engima machine", the U-Boat threat could be interdicted, since their objectives and positions would be known in advance by the allies.

>This is nasty stuff, but U-boat warfare has never been a nice, clean business. This is the kind of trickery that never would have been included in any of the wartime naval war films. It seemed too sneaky to depict at the time, and it also could have disclosed secret plans that were in progress. Nevertheless, this theme keeps the film honest and prevents the excellent acting, script and props from ever appearing to be just another cliche submarine film. Instead, U-571 appears to be an honest, gritty, and not-all-peaches-and-cream depiction of a miserable chapter of the most miserable of all wars.

>THE SCENERY:
<
>
<
>The finest actor by far was the the collection of wonderful, realistic sets of the old U-boat and the older American Fleet Sub that was used as a counterfeit U-boat. Add to this, you had the uniforms, a German Destroyer, and World War 2 era aircraft.

>THE CAST:
<
>
<
>I was most impressed with the three leads. Matthew McConaughey must rise to complete the mission and face an epiphany of sorts in so doing as Lt. Andrew Tyler. Bill Paxton, as Tyler's Captain Lt. Commander Mike Dahlgren, gives him the last puzzle piece he needs to become both a Captain and a man. Harvey Keitel as old "sea-dog" Chief Klough, is his usual excessive self, but in a highly genial role. Chief Klough must be the glue that connects Tyler to reality and the crew toward blind loyalty and obedience to their Captain.

>BOTTOM LINE: DOES THE END JUSTIFY THE MEANS?
<
>
<
>It really comes down to a story of expedience. Does the end justify the means? See the film and, in the process of being entertained, you may come to some conclusions of your own.
