Customer Reviews of Twilight Zone: The Complete Definitive Collection
Twilight Zone Definitive Collection Not as discribed. <
>NO CLOSED CAPTIONED as stated. Unfortunately we only discovered it once the package was opened. I puchased it as a gift for a friend but without the captions it is worthless to her. <
>I am going to request my money back for their infraction. <

Worth spending money for
Firstly, I will address the negatives in this set. There are two.
<
>
<
>1. The packaging is ridiculously cheap and prone to damage. Each season is a book containing the discs in disc trays. I've had to glue two of them back in so far.
<
>
<
>2. Contrary to what some may think, not all of the 156 episodes in this set are masterpieces. There's a fair amount of stinkers that range in theme from pretentious (The Gift) to preachy (Deaths-Head Revisited) to just plain awful (Black Leather Jackets).

>Now for the good things.

<
>1. The set's current price of $US 170 is a real steal.

>2. 150 out of the 156 episodes in this set look and sound marvelous. I showed one episode to a friend, and he commented, "I've seen worse quality from films released last year." The six exceptions to the rule are the videotaped episodes from season 2, which combine awful editing, tape dropouts, fluid motion, ungodly amounts of contrast, and harsh sound quality into six 25-minute trainwrecks. Not helping is the fact that only one of these is worth watching (Long Distance Call).

>3. The special features are exceptional. The audio commentaries are a nice addition considering the age of this material, even though a few aren't worth listening to (Mickey Rooney, anyone?). Submitted For Your Approval is still an exceptional documentary, the clips from Serling's various TV appearances are fun to watch, and most of the really good music scores are isolated, even if they're stock music. However, as some have pointed out, Marc Scott Zicree's audio interviews (to be found on seasons 1-4) are endlessly annoying due to his tendency to grunt at everything the interviewee says. Still, many of the special features are worth your time.

>Overall, I give this set a 4.5, nicking off half a point due to the cheap, easily damaged packaging and the fact that there are a few really awful episodes to be found.
