Customer Reviews of True Blue
A true blue classic "True Blue" was my first exposure to Madonna's music back in the late '80s. Ten years and plus some I relieve those days with a remastered version of "True Blue". I almost forgot how much I love the title track. "True Blue" has such a '60s pop feel to the song. It's upbeat and catchy. "La Isla Bonita" is my other all time favorite Madonna song pre-"Ray of Light". I love how Madonna incorporates flamenco guitar and an overall latin feel to the song long before that wretched latin movement in the past couple of years. Madonna was way ahead of her time, long before Christina Aguilera decided to put out a spanish album. "Live to Tell" is classic Madonna. The ballad is probably one of the best ballads Madonna has ever done in her career and back then the song was a foretelling of her abilities to put out great ballads. A lot of people interpret "Papa Don't Preach" as a pro-life/anti-choice song but I don't think so. I think Madonna's intentions were to make people think and decide what she was singing about. The remixes of "True Blue" and "La Isla Bonita" are excellent too.
For Full-Fledged 80's Pop, Look No Further
While this album may be a little silly or childish in the eyes of some narrow-minded, what it really is is a little time capsule of great 80's pop music. It may sound outdated today, sure, but who can resist songs like OPEN YOUR HEART and PAPA DON'T PREACH, with their cool, strengthening lyrics and excellent vocals via Madonna? While there may be pop ditties that essentially need no further listen to like JIMMY JIMMY, WHERE'S THE PARTY?, or LOVE MAKES THE WORLD GO 'ROUND (the latter two of which are actually still good-sounding), the album is still full of good material, an odd accomplishment. For an album of relatively short length, True Blue packs in a great amount of fun ear candy. Also included are the presence of three other Top 5 hits, TRUE BLUE (very much a ditty but a hit), the haunting #1 ballad LIVE TO TELL and the flighty, darkly enchanting LA ISLA BONITA. Another lesser-known treat on the album is WHITE HEAT, Madonna's dedication to James Cagney. All in all, if you're looking for some good 80's pop or you're a Madonna completist that hasn't picked up a copy of TRUE BLUE yet, go ahead and do pick up a copy. Now you have no excuse, with the two great remixes at the end and the fantastic original LP artwork included. In fact, the front cover should make it an easy sell anyway.
40 minutes of pure fun on one CD!
After 2 mega-selling albums with 1983's self-titled album and 1984's sometimes imfamous "Like A Virgin", Madonna avoids the third album jinx by releasing her greatest selling album to date at this point in her career "True Blue".
Released in August of 1986, this CD outsold it's two predecessors and it deserved all of the success that it got. Although it's certainly cheesy in some ways, "True Blue" is to me Madonna's album where a much greater maturity took the podium and her voice sounds so much better than it did previously.
While most of these songs like "True Blue" and "Jimmy Jimmy" border on the edge of 1980s bubble-gum pop music this CD is one of my favorites for two really excellent and thought-provoking classic hits which are "Papa Don't Preach" and "Live To Tell". The former while certainly straight-out pop in nature has a very dramatic and pleading sense of urgency and a great orchestral sound to back it up. "Live To Tell" is in my opinion Madonna's greatest ballad and having a really dark yet bright sound with a really dramatic undertone about someone surviving a horrific crime or accident (whatever you call it) and living to tell about it. I really love the haunting keyboard effects and the echoing beat.
"Open Your Heart" is a long-lasting classic with those memorable tinkling keyboard effects but it is really starting to show it's age with those tingling keyboard effects but it's still great to listen to.
I strongly recommend this for Madonna fans because it is just plain fun and people from anywhere on the intelligence scale can really enjoy this album because it's just plain fun and is a great time capsule for a great year in music (In my opinion). The remastered edition has really improved sound quality and included are two extra remixes of "True Blue" and "La Ista Bonita" both of which are good.
In a way it makes me sad to think that Madonna has lost her way in making such great music like this with her latest atrocity that is "American Life" which sounds far more dated than "True Blue" does.
