Are you a team player? You'd better be if you hope to succeed in Tribes 2, an epic first-person shooter where the lifetime of a lone wolf is usually measured in seconds. Like its predecessor, Tribes 2 focuses on team-based multiplayer combat in 40th-century wars between jetpack-equipped infantry factions. A minimal single-player tutorial campaign is included to let newcomers familiarize themselves with the game's mechanics, but nothing can fully prepare a person for the chaos of Tribes 2's unique flavor of multiplayer first-person combat.

Tribes 2 simply shines in the multiplayer team conflicts for which it was designed, and the tactical possibilities are nearly endless. Players can hop into vehicles, as a pilot skims over the planet's surface and threads narrow canyons while team members in the back blast enemies as they whip by. Miles of varying terrain separate each team's base, yet the transitions from outdoors to indoors are entirely seamless, regardless of an installation's complexity. There are endless weapon load outs and armor combinations from which to choose, and equipment, such as targeting lasers and deployable defense turrets, really add to the game's depth. For example, a player in light scout armor can quickly move to within range of an outpost, then illuminate it with the targeting laser for his heavily armed buddies crouching behind a hill. These heavies can fire their mobile mortars in complete safety with the knowledge that the laser will guide the rounds on target. This is just one example of the need for teamwork in Tribes 2.

Graphically, Tribes 2 leaves a little to be desired in terms of detail, but the massive environments more than compensate for that shortcoming. It sometimes is possible to see enemies approaching from a few miles away, and those foolish enough to silhouette themselves on a ridgeline are soon dispatched by an enemy laser sniper they'll probably never see. The special effects are excellent, and there are few shooters on the market that can match the intensity Tribes 2 reaches when dozens of players are fighting all at once. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Crisp graphics with great special effects
  • Team-based gameplay offers a whole new world for deathmatch fans to explore
Cons:
  • Lame single-player campaign
  • It is tough to learn the ropes in the brutal online matches

Customer Reviews of Tribes 2

What to expect from this game
First off, I have a high end system (w/ GeForce3) and a cable modem. Since I greatly exceed the minimum requirements, I feel I can accurately describe how the game should optimally run.

Graphics: The actual models aren't too impressive, other fps games have better models for both players and weapons. It's landscapes however, are staggering. The amount of space you play in is akin to a zone in everquest, it's HUGE. The terrain is also similar to what you'd see in everquest, probably a bit more detailed. So, I'd say Tribes2 ranks about average when it comes to detail, but does very well when you consider the terrain.

Sound: There is nothing terribly unique about the sound effects, however sound plays an essential role in this game. Not only is there voice support, there are dozens of preset commands that are prerecorded. For example: V-N-B - V activates the vocal commands, Selects 'I need,' B selects 'a bombadier' These greatly facilitate the team play that makes Tribes 2 special. Because of how sound is used to make the game more playable, I have to give it high marks for that.

Control: Ok, it's good and bad. Good in that there are many different things you can do, bad that you have to learn them all. The default settings will also drive a classic FPS player nuts, but fortunately controls are completely customizable.

Gameplay: This is the finest team FPS game I've played. I was a HUGE Team Fortress Classic addict, but it can't touch this when it comes to the necessity of teamwork. There are so many different roles for a person to play, and it's possible to rapidly change those roles as needed. ON defense you don't just defend your flag, you need to defend your generator that powers your base, your turrets so they can help defend against enemies, your vehicle base so your team can maintain a vehicle presence, etc. THe same goes for offense. Going directly for the flag will tend to get you killed over and over. ONe person takes out the turrets, another provides cover, and another grabs the flag, during the confusion, ANOTHER sneaks inside the base to cause more havoc. Almost every other FPS game you succeed by straight killing the other players, in Tribes 2, if you do that you'll end up missing the guy that just blew up your base turret.

If you're looking for more human interaction in a FPS game, THIS is *the* game. If you enjoy the straight deathmatching, then you should look elsewhere.

Tribes 2 Review
Tribes 2 is a sequel-based game to the classic Starsiege and the later-released Starsiege Tribes 1. Overall this game is great for your typical hardcore gamer, as this game is fast-paced and action-packed. Many users will find this game challenging, as the level of competition increases every year as the popularity increases. The game has many features that are suitable for most users:

Great graphics and Highly Detailed

Excellent Online Gameplay, with everything at your fingertips.

Excessively Large and Friendly Online Community

Well-Organized and Built-In Community with Chat, Customization Options, Forums, Automatic Updates, News, and Training.

Customization Options, such as 'Your Own Tribe' (Clan), and and skin options from Different types of armor to your Player Name.

Over 4 Different Types of Vehicles you can drive from 1-6 player support (meaning 1 through 6 players may ride in the same vehicle, depending on the vehicle.)

And so much more, I could go on and on!
The Technical System Requirements are fitted to work on most systems:

Operating Systems

Win95B, Win98, Win2K, WinME, WinNT (Service Pack 4.0), and Win XP

System RAM
64MB Minimum (128MB Suggested)

Hard Drive Space
531MB Hard Drive (with 300MB Swap Space)

Peripherals
DirectSound-compatible Sound Card required
DirectInput-compatible Controllers are supported

CPU Speed
Video Cards (12MB VRAM or better REQUIRED)

Min CPU (300Mhz) : GeForce, GeForce 2, Diamond Viper II, ATI Rage 128.

Min CPU (400Mhz) : TNT, TNT2, Radeon, Matrox G400, Matrox G450, Voodoo 3

Min CPU (500Mhz) : Voodoo 2, Voodoo 4, Voodoo 5, Kyro, Permedia 3.

NOTE: Any card listed at a lower CPU can be used (of course) with higher CPUs. The listed CPUs are MINIMUMS for those cards.

ALSO NOTE: The Voodoo 3 has a lower threshhold CPU than the V4 & V5 because its drivers handle texture swapping better.

ONE LAST NOTE: Some of these cards actually perform adequately on lower systems than I list here, but graphics have to be turned down to a point that we find unacceptable. Users can make up their own minds on that, if they wish.

And as I said this is a great game, probably one of the best games for computer, with the Unreal Tournament Series as an alternative...

Incredible simply amazing
ive been playing tribes 2 for maybe 2 years. and in all of my experiences i have never found a game that was this good. first off, you know your in for a treat when you start a match and you see men flying around everywhere in arieal combat. The maps are huge and its easy to get lost. Tribes 2 combines rpg and first person shooting like never before. there are 3 armour types light medium and juggernaut. each carrys diffrent weaponry, for example a light can only care small equipment while a juggernaut carrys huge weapons. This gives the player a diffrent role in the game. Juggernauts defend or provide heavy attack while lights go for speed wreckign havoc at great speeds and heights. To give even more team play to the game, you dont have to be a good shooter to do well, you can go around and repair turrets or drive a tank and support your forces. As well as setting up defenses in your base or putting mines in areas where the enemy keeps harrasing you. There are 6 types of veichles. Ranging from fighters (shrikes) to bombers to motor cycles and transports and a mobile base. The game is clearly made to support clan warfare because in the menu you can see tribe websites as well as plan fights in the chat rooms. There is also a single player which is basically a tutorial. It has no real storyline though. This game was made for the online play. But if your internet is too slow or your in a lan party, you can put up to 16 bots which are smart but ultimatley not as fun playing with as humans. The game is also made better by allowing players to create their own maps weapons and characters and veichles so you can have a diffrent experience in the same game. The only downside to this though is that sometimes the game will exit in an unhandled expectation. Although this is rare it will really get you mad. Though if you download the patch which is mandatory for online play, it will happen even less. In summary to me this game is a one of a kind that combines team play with action and creativity. although the learning curve is pretty steep you will still love it. buy it or wait for the upcoming sequel tribes: vengeance.
