In the second program of the Treasure Houses of Britain series, our thoughtful and knowledgeable guide, John Julius Norwich, the viscount of Norwich, introduces us first to Houghton Hall, today owned by the Chumley family. Houghton was built in the early 18th century by Sir Robert Walpole and is a grand monument to the Italian architect Palladio, who came into fashion after English aristocrats tired of the Baroque style. Inside it still features the decorative flare of the flamboyant and innovative William Kent, whose opulent, classically influenced tastes were adored by many a landowner eager to display his wealth. Also inside is an army of antique toy soldiers collected since his youth by the current marquis of Chumley, who painstakingly arranged hundreds of the figures to capture famous battles scenes, such as a famous turning point in the Napoleonic Wars' Battle of Waterloo. From there Norwich takes us to the Scottish border, to Drumlanrig Castle, a favorite haven of the 19th-century poet and leader of the Scottish cultural renaissance Sir Walter Scott. Next we go to West Wycombe Park, built in the mid-18th century by Sir Frances Dashwood, a "new" aristocrat and hedonist who hosted the legendary orgies of the Hellfire Society--a liberated and irreverent cadre of the recently wealthy--in the underground catacombs of his chalk quarry. From one glorious residence to the next, we glean insightful and idiosyncratic tidbits of English history and lore, all of which give renewed appreciation for both eras passed and today's perhaps more subdued expressions of grandeur. --Rebecca Wright
