The 1985 series Tatakae Cho Robot Seimetai Transformers ("Fight Super Living Robots Transformers") was a U.S.-Japanese coproduction, written in America and animated in Japan. Based on a line of robot toys from Takara--licensed to Hasbro in America--that could be reconfigured into cars, trucks, planes, etc., it spawned numerous sequels and a feature. Civil war rages on the planet Cybertron between the virtuous Autobots and the evil Decepticons. Both sides launch crews into space to find new energy sources, but the ships crash on Earth and are buried in lava. When the robots awaken four million years later, the Decepticons, led by the dictatorial Megatron, want to drain the planet of its resources, enslaving or destroying mankind. The Autobots ally with humanity and befriend oil-rig worker Spike Witwicky. The Saturday morning-style cheat of cutting to a logo, rather than animating transitions, and the frequent pauses for commercial breaks make for very choppy storytelling. The designs of the robots are interesting but lack the graphic sophistication of Yoshiyuki Tomino's Gundam Mobile Suits. The animation is very limited, and the choreography of the battle sequences lacks the panache of Tomino and other more talented directors. Like Robotech, Transformers will appeal most strongly to adults who watched the show as kids: it's remained popular through Web sites, role-playing games, fan fiction, and a lively trade in the original toys. Serious students of anime will find this early series of historic interest. Unrated; suitable for age 6 and up: Robot vs. robot violence. --Charles Solomon

Customer Reviews of Transformers - First Season Collector's Edition

Long time Transformers fan
I have been a long time fan of one of the greatest shows ever devised, The Transformers. This box set was well worth the price to relive those classic first season episodes.Classic characters were introduced to us such as OPTIMUS PRIME, JAZZ, BUMBLEBEE, IRON HIDE, RATCHET and WHEELJACK, as well as the Decepticon characters like MEGATRON, STARSCREAM, SOUNDWAVE and THUNDERCRACKER. It was about time they finaly put The Transformers out on glorious DVD 5.1, i was getting tired of crappy VHS cassette tapes! <

>Rhino did a great job getting these episodes on DVD properly, and i might add that they are of better quality then when they originaly aired! Transformers were my first obsession ever, from the days of watching the show to collecting the toys were good memories. The first season started out with the three pilot episodes of the origins of the Transformers and how they came to Earth. These pilots were basically ment to be glorified toy commecials with no intent of acctualy making a whole series after it. No one knew that this effort to sell toys would gain such popularity and grow in too almost four seasons and a motion picture and become one of the biggest phenomenons ever. Although season 1 is not my favorite of them all (season 2 is) it is close, because it laid the groundwork for all future Transformers episodes. Even though season 1 only has 16 episodes, it establishes the arival of Autobots and Decepticons and their foothold in the world around them, both factions are considered threats by humanity, but that changes as Optimus Prime and the Autobots make it their priority to stop Megatrons attempt to exploit the earth and its resources. Season 1 had tons of great episodes and introduced several sub factions of Transformers such as the Dinobots, the Constructicons and the Insecticons, all who play major roles in the Transformers universe. There are a few thing about the show that do get formulatic and thought provoking though, it always works out that every episode is Megatron/Decepticons trying to generate energon cubes or developing some method to defeat Prime, and always utterly failing horribly at it and getting their @$$es kicked every time. You would think that the Decepticons, being a warrior faction and having an endless supply of weapons and renforcments via Cybertron, could get the job done with out too much trouble, but they always managed to steal defeat from the jaws of victory for some reason. You had classic characters like Grimlock, that while powerful (he could both kick the s h i t out of both Prime and Megatron), had the intelligence of a brick,("Me Grimlock!").And who could forget about Starscream? he almost brought a comedic aspect to the show, with his temper tantrums and ego trips. There is the greatest cartoon character ever created, Optimus Prime, who is charismatic and brave, and he is worth this box sets price alone.I thought Season 1 did it's job of basically introducing all of the charcters well, and the episodes are pretty good, but it would get better,as season 2 really defined the show for me. <

>This box sets overall qaulity is good and well worth the money, and the extras were a real bonus in addition to it. Most DVD box sets of TV shows are just lacking, but Rhino just went all out with this. If you remember the show at all, you are definatly gonna want this, as well as Season 2 part 1&2 and Season 3 and 4. <

Rebirth my childhood
I was born the same year that this great show came out, but when I was able to read, write, and understand at around 3 or 4yrs old, I fell in love with TRANSFORMERS, and how cool it was to see cars transform into robots and back as ORDINARY CARS. I was told many of years that my Grandpa's 88 Honda Accord and 66 Chevy Pickup, could transform but only at night when I was asleep :P Later to realize my dreams were crushed :( <
>But I still loved the show, and finally am impressed they came out with the DVD box set season 1. The GOLD OL ANIME DRAWN cartoons. Unfortunatly, the newer cartoons, TRANSFORMERS ARMADA/ENERGON (watch it with my nephews) the animation put into the present day TRANSFORMERS has gotten as lazy as some of the viewers themselves. Not hand-drawn like this good old epic series, just cutpaste computer done now....poorly. Sound quality is good, especially after the timeline its been through of 20+ years. BUY BUY BUY

"AUTOBOTS, ROLL OUT!"
I can describe in words how much joy this brought to me. My freind lent this mother of a box-set to me after hearing how much i loved Transformers as a kid. Even though i had not seen any of these episodes in years, i was actually shocked at how much i remembered what happened in them. You see, i was mad into the "Formers" as a little one, having seasons 1&2 and some of 3 and the movie on video cassette (remember those things?)and having the toys of my favorite characters (such as Optimus Prime,Megatron,Starscream,Soundwave,Jazz,Bumblebee,Sideswipe,Skyfire, the Constructacons, ect). I watched this DVD set 14 years after that fact, and it is indeed true that this is aimed at the 80's kids and not at this current wave of braindead kids. I thought that Rhino did a really good job with this box set so i don't know why people were bitchin, the video qaulity is exellent considering the condition the original master tapes were in. The enhancments( sound FXs,colors, ect)are really not a problem to me, after all this is Rhino, they are known for to doing this!(the Black Sabbath Black Box albums had altered EQ for example)It deserves five stars simpley because this was the greatest cartoon ever made, sure, the plots and story lines get very formula and repetative to the point of predictability (how many times are we gonna see Megatron gloat about defeating Prime in some less then brilliant scheme for world domination? or Starscreams comical, half-@$$ed attempts at trying to become leader?) but it still did it's job of telling a good story. I looked up to Optimus Prime as a kid, and still do. Prime is probably the single greatest cartoon character ever devised, how many cartoon characters do you know have geniune charisma or actually care about others well being? Optimus never had a negative or doubtful attitude even in the worst situation, he would always put himself in danger to save others at the risk of his own life. Often Optie would make level-headed decisions that was in the best interest for all, even if it wasn't popular with others sometimes. I really love the big red guy. This box set is 16 episodes of season 1, the first 3 pilot episodes all the way to "Heavy metal War" the season finally. I must admit though, that even though i love the whole thing, my favorite episode is the last one (Heavy Metal War)because it's concept was light years ahead of its time. You basically have a episode that deals with the concept of honor and defeat in a very suprising way. Optimus has to abide by Cybertronian law to leave earth after losing a one on one battle with Megatron (who cheated), i won't ruin the ending but it shows how much pride and honor Optimus Prime as a character has, something todays cartoons have no concept of.
