Customer Reviews of Toxic Avenger (Sp)
classic, but not as good as current troma offerings troma movies are some of the few movies that have gotten better with age. well maybe they kind of went through a slump, but anyways troma is good everywhere. okay, now on to this movie. i love it, its funny, over the top, brought troma to wider audiences, and could gives a rats bottom what anyone thinks(see head crushing scene) what i dont like, is this new two disc edition of it. it is widescreen. im sorry, but i dont have any use for a widescreen dvd. i mean yeah if they show more picture than usual, i love it, but we dont need it here. by the way, i dont know anyone who has a widescreen tv. the packaging is really cool and disc two is great as well, but you do not need this if you have the single disc dvd. unless you are a troma fanatic that needs the newest editions. i say get the single disc one. its cheaper and doesnt become dislodged and scratched when sent through the mail. that is two copies of this new edition ive gone through while my single disc is in perfect condition. now, to all die hard toxie fans..dont hate me, im just frustrated with the new edition. to people wondering whether to get the double disc or the single disc, get the single disc...or better yet, get the tox box!
Bad but Good
This is the most well known of Troma's films. It has everything you would expect from one of their films. Lots of nudity, plenty of violence, a silly story, and no budget. This dvd has tons of extras and is presented uncut. Try renting this one, if you enjoy it, consider picking up the box set which contains the original movie plus the sequels for a great price.
A Whacky Superhero Flick Well Worth Its Cult Status
Plot: Melvin is the epitome of a scrawny geek pushed around by everyone else. But when a prank meant to embarass him goes horribly wrong, he ends up falling into a barrel of toxic waste -- transforming him into a huge, messy monster. Driven to fight evil, he becomes the hero of the small town of Tromaville. He does everything from busting murderers to helping old ladies across the street. But low-life criminals aren't all that's standing in his way. The corrupt mayor of Tromaville wants him dead -- and will go to any lengths to stop this sudden appearance of justice in his rotten town.

>Knowing little about the freaky superhero known as The Toxic Avenger, I was expecting a light-hearted horror/action film about a monster crime-fighter. It was even listed in the horror section. But what I got instead was a highly comedic popcorn flick with plenty of laughs, intentionally hammy acting, cheesy yet witty lines, and bucketloads of violent fun. Toxie and the other characters (including a blind woman who ends up as his lover) were obvious evidence that this is not to be taken seriously. TA is a completely absurd tale that will stupify any viewer. There are a few sublimal hints at how ridiculous some parts of society have become, but come on, who would watch it for the morals?

>To top it all off, this particular DVD edition is a great purchase for anyone who wants to own the movie. The film's presented in its original, uncut version, and the menus are busting at the seams with special features. The people at Troma sure do know how to have good old fashioned fun, and The Toxic Avenger is clear proof. It's one of the dumbest movies you could ever see. And just remember -- that's a good thing! Unrated for Violence, Nudity/Sexual Content, and Language.
