Customer Reviews of Toronto Vs Atlanta
For the first time a Canadian team wins the World Series In the 1992 World Series the Toronto Blue Jays won what would be the first of two consecutive championships, while the Atlanta Braves lost for the second Fall Classic in a row. This would be the second of four titles the Braves lost in the World Series during the decade of the 1990s, although they would win the next time back (this tied the effort by the New York Giants in the 1910s, when John McGraw's team actually lost three Octobers in a row). However, when this six game series was over the headline was that for the first time a team outside of the United States, as well as a team with an African-American manager, had won the World Series for the first time.
The Braves of Bobby Cox got back to the World Series on the strength of a trio of young pitchers--Tom Glavine (20-8), John Smoltz (15-12), and Steve Avery (11-11)--and veteran Charlie Leibrant (15-7). The Blue Jays of Cito Gaston countered with by adding veterans Jack Morris (21-6) and David Cone (17-10) to homegrown pitchers Jimmy Key (13-13) and Todd Stottlemyre (12-11). The biggest hitting star on either squad from Toronto's Joe Carter (34 homer runs, 119 RBI's), but with four of the six games being decided by one run it is not surprising that the key player would end up being Blue Jays' catcher Pat Borders, who ended up as Series MVP.
Game 1 matched up Morris, who had won Game 7 the previous year in a classic 1-0 10-inning game, with Glavine, and the Braves earned a small measure of revenge with a 3-1 victory. In fact, Morris would lose both of his games while Toronto won all the rest, with Duane Ward and Key both earning a pair of one-run victories. When pinch-hitter Ed Sprague doubled his season's home run production with the winning blow in Game 2, that pretty much set the tone for his series as the Atlanta bullpen repeatedly left late-inning leads get away. In the finale, veteran Dave Winfield made up for previous World Series disappointments by doubling off Leibrandt in the top of the 11th to drive in what would prove to be the winning run.
Toronto would take care of the Philadelphia Phillies in six games the following year, to win back-to-back titles, but the opportunity for a three-peat disappeared in the Major League Baseball strike of 1994. When the World Series returned the following fall Atlanta would be back, but the Blue Jays would be back to rebuilding with Cone, Key, and David Wells eventually playing key roles in World Championships for the New York Yankees. So, the 1992 World Series video is a must have for Blue Jays fans, along with the 1993 video. For Braves fans making most of the World Series in a decade (five out of nine) is still a pretty good achievement (only one team has done better with eight visits in the 1950s: guess who).
