Like most festival shows, the Toronto Rocks concert, a SARS benefit held on July 30, 2003 before a teeming crowd of 490,000, is a pretty mixed bag. For one thing, the Guess Who, Rush, AC/DC, and the Rolling Stones--the headliners--are all well past their primes. They're still kicking, of course, and fans of each will relish their sets. But no headliner save Rush exudes the freshness and spark evident in the tantalizing snippets of the performances we don't see on this single-disc DVD: Canadian acts like Blue Rodeo, the Tea Party, and Sass Jordan (with a still-riveting Jeff Healey on guitar). The Stones command more than their fair share of screen time, and some would say they've earned it. Meanwhile, we're also served three helpings of Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi's ho-hum Have Love Will Travel revue. Who steals the show? The Isley Brothers, led by founding singer Ronald and axeman Ernie, who blaze through "Who's That Lady" and their classic "Shout" with a band of lock-tight musicians and dancers.

The DVD includes the kind of full-size color booklet every concert disc should come with, a choice of Dolby Digital 5.1 surround and uncompressed PCM stereo sound (both great), and a dose of "bonus" backstage ballyhoo. A unique extra is the director's broadcast call of the camera shots for AC/DC's "Thunderstruck," revealing the frantic, real-time demands of a live shoot. --Michael Mikesell

Customer Reviews of Toronto Rocks

What contact got Justin Timberlake into this event?
Pretty good performances by a lot of the bands and the dvd gave a decent sense of what it was like that day. Fun to see all the behind the scenes interaction between the bands. Rush's performance was a little stiff though. AC/DC showed why they rock harder than anybody else (fun to just watch the shots of the crowd going nuts). However...the whole Justin Timberlake thing was/is unexcusable? There is a piece of footage of all the bands taking a group photo and in the very center is Justin Timberlake hamming it up with Mick Jagger, Ron Woods, Neil Peart and all the other real legend/musicians. Who does he think he is? I can't believe he even had the gall to accept this gig as a performer. He didn't even have the humility to stand in the back or to the sides during the photoshoot! When the promoters created this lineup, Timberlake should not even have even been considered for the "slim possibility" list. I thought maybe he might be Canadian or a Toronto native and that's why they let him on the bill. NO, we was was born in Tennessee! I'm happy to read that he was pelted with bottles during his performance. Thanks to all those who chucked those at him. Wow. What a joke. In my opinion, Timberlake's presence on this DVD really brought it down. They should have at least cut his performances and not give him a whole DVD extra about how he met the Rolling Stones.

Not A Good Day Performance wise for most of the big bands!!!
I'm a huge fan of AC/DC, so when I heard they where on this DVD I had to get it. But I am very disappointed by the overall performance of all the bands on this DVD. When you look at who is on the bill, and what songs they perform, it looks too good to be true. But then when you hear them play.... I don't know if it was equipment, the venue, or the bands just didn't put on there best performance, but the end results sounded terrible in some cases, and even AC/DC did not sound all that good overall! <

>I even have a copy of the full show, not just this DVD with 3 songs by each band, and even the full sets didn't sound any better. <
> <
>Some bands sounded good, some didn't, but it really surprised me that AC/DC and The Stones did not sound good on this show. They sounded excellent together tho, when Angus and Malcolm Young joined the Stones on stage to play Rock Me Baby, it was the best performance of the day! But on there own, the Stones bored me to death and sounded awful, and Mick Jagger didn't even sound like he was trying to find the right key. <

A Must for any AC/DC or Stones Fan.
This is a great DVD that should be on a priority list for all Stones and AC/DC fans. <
>The great thing about this is the pure rawness of The Rolling Stones performance. I'll explain. I feel for too long the Stones on stage have been so polished and professional that its lost a little of the excitement. The feeling that I got from this is that they plugged in and let it kick. When Justin Timberlake performs "Miss You" with Mick and disappoving fans show their angnst by throwing bottles on stage, Keith stops playing and confronts them during the performance. <
>That was a beautiful throwback (if only for a moment) to "Gimme Shelter Glory Days". <
>When Angus and Malcom Young of AC/DC join the Stones on stage for "Rock Me Baby" the atmosphere is filled with pure magic. The chemistry and the way their playing complements each other brings chills. <
>I'm not sure why Justin Timberlake was included with the line up. This is a Rock and Roll Show- The fans were there to rock, not see an ex-member of a "boy band". I actually felt a little sorry for Justin, but it was clearly not his fault. That type of mix was too extreme for 490,000 people standing in the hot July sun drinking lots of beer and ready to feel power chords in their gut. <
>The extras are great too- its fun watching AC/DC and the Stones get along like old friends and possibly offer a glimpse of a North American tour maybe someday together. <
>If you are a Rolling Stones or AC/DC fan as I am, Take it from me, If you do not own this already,- Get it Today!....Hurry!
